I would be shocked if Apple didn't design the 27inch for a VESA Mount. Time will tell

This is why we can't have nice things.

Without the SMF (Stupid Metal Foot), the new iMacs roughly weigh 8 iPads and 14 iPads respectively. (21" and 27")

8 iPads. That's crazy light and crazy sexy. That's a thing you WANT to VESA mount and swing around.

Don't even begin to tell me about hacked solutions with the SMF always in the way. Ugly and inconvenient.

@giggles well said.

From the rip the imac thread

The stand is mounted from the inside. No more VESA mount for the new 27"

I refuse to believe this.

I can't effing take it with the morons at apple anymore. We are waiting for years for them for a screen with less glare or matte, even more years for an ergonomic stand, and what the hell do they go and do? They take away vesa mounting, as if all of us are giraffes and we can have our eyes at the level that the stand for the imac is...

Unbe-effing-lievable. Every damn manual or ergonomics says top of screen as eye level. The imac can't let you lower the screen to do this, and they take away the only way you can do it via vesa mounting it to a proper stand...

Friction welding and all that jazz, someone needs to de-friction weld their heads from their behinds at apple.

Great tear down Rog btw.

Yes it is shocking that they've done that. I wager it's the thinness that's not allowing them to afford vesa stand.

Another big f u from apple to the pro users, after the mac pro "update" and taking out discrete gfx from the mini. That's Tim Cook's apple and Tim exclusively uses on screen keyboards....I desperately want whatever they are smoking, I am sure it's powerful potent stuff, and I need it so I can get my head around why the mini has to be crippled with no discrete gfx, the mac pro gets "updated" to 3 year old hardware, no thunderbolt, not even usb 3, and the imac loses the vesa mounting....

Update and Comment

Went to the Apple Store, got to the only 27" in the store (can you believe that a genius and customer were camped out in front of it working on an Air) and tilted it forward and found no way to remove the Foot.

Chatted with Apple on line and they confirmed it. I went through 6 Apple reps to hear, no.

You know what it looks like to me...lost revenues for Apple.

I plan to buy Mac Mini's and Asus monitors, saves me a bundle but costs Apple quite a bit -- for one, an evangelist and about a $5,000 sale (granted I will still spend $2K on the minis).

Apple had better check their ego's, they better watch out for getting too cocky. Taking away VESA from a $3000 computer, nice move Jonny. Taking away minimize Title bar from iTunes, yeah, that makes sense. Losing the colors in the Side bar, ugly. Making it harder to remove items from the Dock and making the Title Bars harder to customize (fine for the newbies but those of us who have been with them since 1985, WTF)

Apple has changed. Now, instead of being able to say, "I will never use anything but a Mac or iOS device", they have given me reason to doubt their omniscience.

I feel better now.

just received my 27" yesterday, and has decided to ship it back, i just can´t live with the fact that i cant wall mount it

so for now, i will keep my late 2009 iMac27 that is wallmounted, and hope that apple will come to theirs senses and make a revised edition of the new imac that will be wall mountable.

sincerely

Man, this is a stunner.

My decision to buy 2011 refurb is vindicated by this revelation.

Some enterprise such as OWC or iFixit will probably come up with a kit for replacing the stand with a VESA mount, now that the iMacs have proven to be fairly easy to disassemble and reassemble.

Given that Apple knows pretty much exactly how many iMacs get wall mounted (they sold the only adapters, and obviously know how many iMacs they shipped), I'm sure they have a pretty good idea of how much money they stand to lose if everyone who wall mounted an iMac stops doing so. My guess is it's pretty miniscule.

Might end up being only solution for 27" now, the way it used to be for all the smaller screen iMacs.

thats absoloutley retarded, its a shame that people are actually having to settle for mounting their mac with the stand on..why would you make such a big deal about the thinnest mac ever and then intentionally remove vesa, quite pissed!

$80 for a bracket, PLUS what the cost of the actual arm is ridiculous. If Apple seriously didn't design the 27" new iMac with the ability for it to be VESA mounted, they are idiots.

I didn't realize people even VESA mounted iMacs. Interesting. I wonder what percentage of users really do? Maybe apple was more concerned about making 99.5% of users happy...

I'm so happy that my mid-2011 i5 macmini has discrete graphics. Sure, it's not a great card, but it's far better than the integrated Intel HD3000 that came with the base model.

Also, I purposely bought the non-LED HP monitor BECAUSE it was VESA compatible, if not, there was no way for me to actually look at the monitor for hours on end with and possibly per seriously manently damaging my neck.

Apple really needs to get with it and realize that prosumer and above (re: skill level) users would rather have slightly thicker systems / monitors, that are utilitarian than pretty but useless. At this rate, I might consider making a hackintosh...!

I've been using Apple computers (and other devices: Newton) since I was in elementary school...! There used to be a 'betterness' to Apple. Sure, they had their quirks like a single button mouse for the longest time or you could only adjust the window size from one corner, but they had a usability and logic to them that is disappearing. Sad.

Do you realize you contradicted yourself by stating "]I didn't realize people even VESA mounted iMacs. Interesting. I wonder what percentage of users really do?" and then making up a totally random and fake percentage? "Maybe apple was more concerned about making 99.5% of users happy..."

Makes sense to me... I'm sure the majority of iMac users have no interest in a VESA mount, and have no idea about mounting monitors, period. I happen to be part of that "0.5%," now, but only now. Bit of a bummer.

Not VESA, but why not just install a discreet shelf dedicated to the holding of the iMac if it needs to be off a desk? I would imagine this to be an easier way to reach the ports and adjust as need be then mounting anyway.

A nice stainless steel shelf that isn't too small or big would blend in with the design.

I'm not sure what the size of your desk is, but I need every available sq inch to hold external hard drives, a 2nd monitor, papers, etc... I've been to tons of offices where iMacs are stacked on books and people are cramped because the books push the keyboard too close to their chests...!

I think you mistook me for questioning the need to mount. I was offering up an alternative to VESA to keep it off the desk.

As I said, I had no idea. Sorry for the stat. Just a figure of speech. Perhaps I should have said that Apple was only worried about the overwhelming majority of users that don't VESA mount. I've seen many an iMac, but never VESA mounted.

I must be missing out!

:p

For me, the default position is good but I see the need for VESA mounting in pro environment.

Just a thought, the fact the foot can't be removed means less thefts of clamped iMacs no?

If I was a designer I would add a Kensington lock to the body for this, not make the foot unremovable but there are compromises in everything...

If only apple made a pro level product a bit like a desktop pc that used external displays the user could choose, if they did I bet it would be strongly rumoured to be refreshed shortly. Brilliant idea! Could call it the mac prosumer... Promac...something short and punchy like that... Damn apple need to get with it and make this product already

First said I'm really happy with my r-MBP and the VESA-Mounted Cinema Display.

So I can totally understand why you would like to have the possibility to VESA-Mount your new shiny iMacs and yes it really makes no sense that there isn't a possibility provided by Apple.

But I believe there is hope because:
a) there is a way to teardown the whole system, but you better have a person doing this with a bit of skill or you will end up with a big mess

b) (I think this might be a problem with the warranty) somebody has to come up with a company that cuts the stand in halve and attaches a hinge (to use the iMacs original stand) as well as an VESA-bracket, this obviously would need to be shaved like the iMac (a bit convex) and it also could have air vents

So it just comes down to what time will bring, but clearly there are ways (I don't state that this ways are good, just saying it is possible somehow). Also I doubt that Apple will change this anytime soon, this is not the way Apple has worked in the last couple years.

sry for my bad english.

Lord they have really made major compromises

on this computer. I am sure it will make many people very happy. But it's not for me. Too many compromises made for a thin edge. It does look cool, you have to hand it to them in the looks department.

Here is what I did, I just made a custom attachment, that fits into the opening in the stand.
the four small spheres are rubbers, to prevent the iMac from rotating.

and here, to give an idea how it would look with my old 2007 iMac,
(this was done with two screws through the back stand)

O RLY, and what up-to-date pro level product is that?

Mac Pro

You'll notice I said 'Rumoured to be refreshed shortly' as seen on the very site you are posting on, not 'currently available'. However if you are wanting pro grade tools, buy pro grade products. As said above the massive majority of users will not use VESA mounts, and it was a nice feature that they were previously able to do so, but Apple are bound to pander towards what the majority of people will use rather than making the design larger/thicker for a very small portion of users.

So YA RLY.
