I'm looking to upgrade our TV Set from a 1080p screen to a 4K set-up. Not sure if this a home theater question or Mini..

Currently we have a Mac mini 2012 2.5Ghz 16GB RAM and AppleTV 3 hooked up to our set. If I introduce a 4K screen and connect it via HDMI to either the TV3 or Mac mini will it even show anything? will it downscale to the most appropriate resolution for each device?

ATV Output is 1080p
2012 mini won't do 4K either.

Would need a 2014 mini to output 4K and then over the tb ports, the hdmi would be 30Hz only

im not expecting 4K, but will the TV set downscale to 1080p? or will it be completely unusable?

It will work just fine I have been using a Samsung 4K curved TV with a Macmini for at least a year.
The TV will also do line doubling so a picture from a 1080 source looks great.
