When I plug in the charger to the computer the light won't show on the cord. It will show the charging symbol on the screen but won't go past the number it's on which is 1%. I tried everything including resetting the SMC and all the other resets and even tried using a different cord. It did the same thing. I also checked to see if it was my charger that was broken on another person's computer and it charged just fine so its not the charger. Is there anything I can do because I really can't afford to go to the apple store right now to get it fixed.

When connected to the air, are you sure the magsafe led isn't glowing a very faint green? You may only be able to see the led in a darkened environment.
Yes I'm very sure and when I plug that same cord into another MacBook it works fine so it's not the magsafe that's broken

In this case, I'm believe there is something wrong with the charging circuit in that there is probably a defective capacitor.

The best thing would be to have it diagnosed by a competent board level repair tech. Don't bother taking it to the Apple Store as they'll just want to replace the entire logic board for hundreds of dollars.

I actually have an early 2015 that was repaired due to liquid damage that exhibits the same problem. I see the charging battery icon in High Sierra, the magsafe led glows a very faint green, battery is actually losing power, and the system report shows that there is no charger connected. I'm taking mine back to the repair shop to have it fixed under their warranty.

I have the issue occasionally that the light won‘t show up but after unplugging and retrying everything is working out.

This may seem obvious, but have you checked to make sure the connections inside the port on the Mac are clean and not obstructed by anything?
