Hi all,
Bit of a sad day—my trusty Mid 2012 Mac mini (quad-core i7, 16GB RAM) suddenly powered off (during basic web browsing) and won’t come back to life. Looks like it’s finally given up after a solid 12+ years.
I do have a spare 2018 Mac mini (i3, currently with 30GB RAM installed), but I’ve always found it a bit underwhelming compared to what I expected—even though on paper it should outperform the 2012.
I’m now debating what to do next:
Thanks!

I’m now debating what to do next:
- Stick with the 2018 i3 (already owned, 30GB RAM)
- Sell it (~£250–£300?) and put that + £100 savings towards a base M4 Mac mini (~£495 refurb)
- Or consider an M2 Mac mini if I can find a decent deal
- General daily use (web, Office, etc.)
- Some light dev / tinkering
- Photoshop
- Logic Pro
- Occasional media/server-type tasks
- I tend to keep machines for a long time (as the 2012 proves…)
- Should I try replacing the PSU in my 2012 Mini first?
- Is the M2 worth considering at all now, or better to go straight to M4 for longevity?
Thanks!
