I recently purchased a second 2012 mini for use as a secondary desktop. The mini works well with one exception; any display hooked into the Thunderbolt port isn't recognized. The Thunderbolt port itself works fine; I've hooked my MacBook Air into it and it was recognized fine. The HDMI port works fine as well. I've tired different displays, different adapters, all with the same result. I've tried PRAM and SMC resets as well. Any ideas?

Don't know if it is the same problem.

But I had similar trouble when I first got my 2012 Mini and Dell display. Turned out that some TB (aka Mini Display Port) cables at the time were not up to the task. IIRC it was a manufacturing issue with mismatched standards (an earth wire on the wrong pin ? ).

That was 4.5 years back. The replacement cable that solved the problem is still running fine.

By adapters do you mean cables? I only need a single cable between the Mini and the display, with no adapters along the way.

Thanks for the reply. I'm hooking it up to DVI monitors, so I'm using a MiniDP-->DVI adapter. I've tried different monitors and different adapters, each with no joy.

Does it work by itself?

My 2012 mini has done fine driving an Asus PB278Q via miniDP to DP cable. Been working that way for three years now.

Just added a 2nd monitor (Dell P2217H) via HDMI and it mostly works, though I'm sometimes seeing an issue when the mini wakes from sleep. It'll start to wake the displayport monitor but then drop the signal. HDMI monitor wakes just fine. Just got the 2nd monitor a couple days ago and haven't had time to diagnose much other than switching out the old miniDP to DP cable for a new one.
