I had the same issue fans going off randomly when doing nothing I couldn't put up with the fans going off all the time. I have had two mid 2012 versions and they are now sending me a 2013 version to see if this works.

It's so annoying as I love the computer but can't put up with something that is broken from the beginning and paying over £2000 I want it to be right.

Does anyone have any more news. Apple when I spoke to them are playing dumb and say they don't know anything about it

They may not know...yet. These just came out. Not sure I want to beta test with 2800$

Yep. Istat reports idle temps in the low 40s and all components seem cool. No CPU load in activity monitor and CPU is generally at <4% load.

Spotlight is not indexing either.

That's very strange. Fan noise bothers me a lot, so I understand your concern. Does iStat tell you your fan speeds? Hardware Monitor tells me the limits are 2160-5940 RPM (left fan) and 2000-5499 (right fan).

I just fired up HandBrake to heat up my processor. The fans start at their idle speed of about 2000 RPM and start to pick up when the CPU temp gets to about 95 degrees C. At about 3000 RPM the sound begins to become noticeable. In my test, they maxed out at about 5500 RPM (left) and 5200 (right) with a CPU temp of 100 degrees C. The fan speeds seem to fluctuate in order to maintain the CPU temp at 100 degrees.

Edit: FYI - my machine is a base model 2012 15" rMBP

Yes fans go up to max per smcfan control or istat. Cpu stays at 40c no load

I have purchased online so am getting different batches one each one coming from China

I may do this but if I do I'll just buy base model plus 16gb.
