looking soon, to replace hard drive with ssd hard drive- I seem to have developed the beachball syndrome.---

in order to delay the ssd replacement effort --would it be wise and helpful to reload Mojave?-I have done this a few times in the past -and it seemed to clean up up sluggishness, but now beach ball -it has been that way for a while -done the usual restarts -safe mode -vram etc..and disk uitl ...so I am guessing bb is hard drive old age and will be cured with ssd...meanwhile unless you guys discourage me I will reload mojave-though not sure why that would or should work?- thanks all

That’s why I had suggested before to just swap out the internal drive with a SSD. It is a not so difficult task.

There is NOTHING that you can do that will "fix the speed problems", other than booting and running from an SSD.
It can be an external or an internal SSD.

If you don't have the expertise to open and change out the internal drive yourself, you can "work around that" by using an EXTERNAL SSD.

Do you understand?

Having said that, did you buy an external SSD yet, and try to set it up to boot and run the iMac that way?

yes, I do understand ..thank you. and thanks to youtube demos- a guy a best buy and other stumbling around the net- it can either be a very smooth process or not....or not is my usual dilemma--so I want an experienced helper ...I am a bit reluctant to take it to apple -to far for me...the advantage for me to replacing is cleaning inside the case glass etc so will find someone to my liking ...and pay them and watch....seen it on demo but my hands are to big ...and I want someone who has replaced h.d. with ssd a couple of times....thanks for your help --best buy guy says samsung...for ssd...not sure what size but will cross that bridge after I crown my tooth buy tires and pay car insurance...you know how that all goes I bet. unless imac turns to crap, then it moves up the "to do" list':..

I have been thinking about reloading Mojave?? but like you say will do NO good. ran etercheck yesterday havent looked at it yet ...at least carefully but seems ok...will look later today...thanks for your help...
No on ssd buy ...yet--again...thank you
