As a MacPro user since 2004, I'm on the sidelines cheering for the new iMac Pro. One would think that as an owner of a 2013 MacPro, I would be dismayed by this new beast arriving in December. Initially, I thought, "WTF?!" However, I looked on the bright side. If Apple can get that kind of performance out of an all-in-one, what are they going to bring to market in the 2018 MacPro? I am jubilant. So here's to everyone awaiting the new iMac Pro. As excited as you are, I'm even more.

Thank you Apple.

Exactly. I use a 2013 MP and was very happy to see the iMac pro. My reason is that I can get 2013 MP performance (or much more actually) in the iMac format. If the iMac Pro is the “light weight” work station, the 2018 MP must logically be much more powerful to make sense. Let’s hope.

I am sure it will be very good but Apple never committed to a 2018 Mac Pro just that one was coming so don't hold your breath about getting one in your hands until 2019.

Given what Apple staff had publicly mentioned about the new Mac Pro, if it does not appear by late 2018, it will be a huge disaster for Apple.

Too bad that my 2010 Mac Pro is showing its age, so I can't wait until mid 2018 for a new Mac Pro. I will pull the trigger once the iMac Pro is announced.

It's not a huge disaster for Apple. Apple is primary a mobile device company(revenue for iPhones are typically
5 times higher than all Mac computers combined). On top of this it's not like Tim Cook made a huge announcement at a Apple event stating that a Mac Pro was coming in 2018. Apple has made no official commitment on a date.

iMac Pro is Apple's answer for the wait of the Mac Pro. Apple wants the Mac Pro users waiting to just purchase that instead which indicates that it is working by your intention to replace your Mac Pro with a iMac Pro. Most people probably won't even have a iMac Pro in their home until the start of the new year so it's not like Apple will be racing to get the Mac Pro out ASAP. Hopefully it comes out in 2018 but there might just be an announcement on it with shipping in 2019.

I am sure not having a Mac Pro before 2019 won't affect Apples overall profit, because as you said, Apple is a mobile device company. My "disaster" only applies to the "pro" sector of its business. It will drive more pro users away, more than not mentioning Mac Pro in the past two years. Mentioning it but not delivering it is way worse.

That ship has sailed since 3+ years went by without a single peep from Apple. Most of the "pros" that needed to leave already did. The holdouts that need a new workstation grade Apple computer now have an iMac Pro to buy.

Really Apple has been focusing efforts away from the "pro" sector of its business for a long time now(take a note which pro apps they have killed off in the last decade). You're dealing with a company that makes most of their money from smartphone sales hence this is where most efforts will be focused on. Apple stock is at it's highest ever. Not to say they won't deliver some cool pro apps or computers but it's not a #1 focus or even close to one and it never will be again.

Mentioning it but not delivering it is way worse.

Apple never committed to a date. I'm sure it's coming but there's no indication on when this thing will actually ship. Don't be surprised it will be 2019 before they are actually arriving to users. Apple at this point is treating the Mac Pro as a halo product which means they are in no rush to get this out since it's not a big revenue generating machine that will help their stocks. When the Mac Pro comes out it needs to be innovative and make some headlines. It would be an extremely simple task for Apple to come out with some computer that looks like a Dell server workstation that runs OSX and that would satisfy pro needs. But we all know Apple doesn't play that game. This will be a halo product like the trashcan Mac Pro. Most pro users realize this so the ones that can't make do with the current Apple offerings have jumped shipped. Some pro users needs are met with the iMac and Macbook Pros so they are still on the Apple ship.

I replace my Mac Pros every 4-5 years so the new iMacPro followed by a new Mac Pro (circa 2018) will meet the timeline perfectly. The advantage of Apple releasing a new iMacPro will provide an indicator of what we can expect in a Pro release. So even though I'll be watching others open a new iMacPro this holiday season, I'll be getting a benefit from it as well.

Anxiously awaiting.

down clocked cpu's are not good sign for performance and a cooling system that makes it so you can't change ram or storage. Unless you unglue the screen is a joke!

What are apple thinking releasing a machine that is configured like an all in one with xeon processors vega graphics, a 5K P3 screen and up to 128gb EEC RAM for professionals, they must be nuts. :p

I'm wondering when they'll be available for order. Especially since it states, "Available December". Somewhere in a factory an executive is asking, "how many will we have available for Xmas shipping?"

I am a Mac Pro 2013 owner (6 core configuration) and I am not really thrilled by the iMac Pro. I think the main difference between the two category is not the performance (even the actual IMac 5K is powerful then the MAC Pro for some tasks) but the durability and the quietness of the setup. A Mac Pro can handle heavy tasks 24/7 without failure and I am not sure the IMac line-up can do it as well.

Now that I am less working on the Mac Pro, I am selling it for the new IMac 5K that is enough powerful to handle all the tasks that were handled by my Mac Pro. If I needed more power and seeking for durability I would have wait for the new Mac Pro.
In my own opinion IMac Pro is a non-sens prresented and selled as a pro-grade machine but unable to evolve (no ram or HD evolution is a deal breaker for me at this tag price).
