I just want to send out a warning for 2013 Mac Pro users NOT to try and update to Monterey Beta 8!!! It does NOT work, and it toasts your Mac Pro. You start the install, the Mac Pro reboots, and then it hangs. You can reboot all you want, it does not get any further than about 30%. You cannot go into Recovery, as it doesn’t exist, and you cannot restore from Time Machine. The ONLY solution I found was using another Mac to download Monterey Beta 6, create a USB installer, and then install Beta 6 ”on top” of the failed Beta 8 installation. That works.

The result is of course that you are back to Beta 6, and you can’t update to Beta 7 anymore. Hence, you need to stay away from Beta 8. Several people have reported this issue.

If anyone has the Delta Beta 6 -> Beta 7 installer, or a Beta 7 install file I can make a USB installer from, I’d very much appreciate a link.

Same issue here!

Installing Beta 8 worked fine on my Mac Pro (Late 2013), but a problem manifested that makes it look like the machine is toast. Namely, none of the Thunderbolt 2 ports supported video anymore once the boot process was far enough to switch to the desktop, no matter what kind of cable I tried. Video continues to work fine through the HDMI port. I'm aware of another Mac Pro (Late 2013) with the same issue.

OK - so maybe it is a TB port issue. Similar troubles has been reported from MacBook Pro users with external monitors.

I went from beta7 to 8 no problems works fine.

What configuration do you have that makes this work?

My 2013 Mac Pro updated to beta 8 (I can VNC in just fine), but no display available over thunderbolt 2. The display is detect, and the screen attempts to start, but then goes back to sleep.

Also did delta update from beta 7 to beta 8 with seemingly no ill effects on a quad-core Late 2013 with default D300 GPUs.

Tested with an Apple HDMI to DVI adapter from an old Mini hooked into HDMI, and also Apple TB2 to DVI adapter, both seemed fine.

Same problem here. Mac Pro 2013 Cylinder. Hung at the nice lady saying "To use English as the main language press the return key." So it was all ready to complete the setup, but no display other than the progress bar that remained stuck at about 3/8 from complete on the primary display. I'm using two TB Apple Displays. I downgraded back to Big Sur and will wait to see if the issue gets resolved with Beta 9.

I have two Mac Pros, a 2013 and a 2020 one. Because I tried Beta 8 on my 2013 one first I know not to update Beta 7 on the 2020 MP. I am now back to Beta 6 on the 2013 MP, and will wait until Beta 9…

Beta 6 and 7 are actually good enough to use…

^^^^A 2020 Mac Pro❓ I updated my 2019 NcMP within minutes of release. No issues here👍

But I have ten internal SSDs. Five are bootable. One is still on Beta 7, two are on Big Sur.

How do you get the old betas to install over the new beta?

I have the problem too: displayport does not work, but HDMI does.

Unfortunately, an exactly same issue happened with me too. In addition, I have formatted my Mac Pro 2013 Cylinder and re-installed twice the fresh Big Sur and upgraded to Monetery Beta 8 and still received same issue !!

Therefore,
I re-installed the Big Sur OS and waiting for fixing the Monetery OS.

Thanks for the heads up. I tried some of the earlier Monterey betas on my Mac Pro 2013, but not the latest ones. I decided I'll wait for the release candidate. I'll hold off on that too when it's available to make sure this problem is resolved.

Up-to-and-including Beta 7 works fine on the 2013 Mac Pro. However, if you have tried to update to Beta 8, and screwed up your Mac, you can revert to Beta 6, via a USB installer update on top of the failed Beta 8.

If you want to get back to Beta 7, that’s a bit more tricky. The Beta 7 download I have found, has a screwed-up installer, and though I have found detailed explanations on how to create the Beta 7 USB installer, it will not work for me.

So at least for now I am back to Beta 6 - the only thing that does not work for me is Safari in combination with the BitDefender extensions.

After having run on Beta 8 on my Mac Pro 2013 via HDMI for 5d now, I'm beginning to wonder if Beta 8 broke the graphics acceleration somehow.

Beta 6 and 7 felt so incredibly buttery smooth, almost like I had a new machine. Beta 8 feels clunky, windows feel stuck in place for a fraction of a second before the move when dragging, and window scrolling is much slower.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Anyone tried updating to Beta 9 on a Mac Pro? Supposedly the Thunderbolt/DP port issues have been fixed...

From a Reddit site:

5. Did Beta 9 fix the Beta 8 monitor issues? UPDATE! Multiple reddit users have confirmed that the monitor issue is fixed in beta 9!

I am not even getting the option to update to Beta 9. It is still only Beta 8 being offered to me. I am on Beta 6 after the failed Beta 8 install...

Beta 9 fixed my display issues. I’m back on my mDP cable at 3008x1682 at 60Hz \o/

The original problem, when updating from Beta 7 to Beta 8, how did that manifest?

My 2013 Mac Pro is connected via TB/DP to two Apple ATDs, and when rebooting after the update, the boot sequence just kind of hung at about 35% progress. I could still see the Apple icon and the progress bar, but it stopped. Only going back to Beta 6 worked out for me.

Is this the same thing you experienced, which seems to be sorted now?

And I am definitely not putting any more Beta on my new Mac Pro - which is my work machine.

I have a single 4K monitor, but otherwise similar. I have coworkers with dual monitors that work again after b9.

Probably a good idea to wait if your system is like mine: Mac Pro late 2013 with TB display either dual or single. I tried intsalling Monterey Beta 9 and had the exact same issue at the same spot. Will wait for Beta 10.
