I've got a nice little 2013 11" Air here with the i5, 4 GB RAM and a stock 128 GB SSD. I really only use it as a spare machine and for travel.
I was half-considering picking up an OWC drive to replace and upgrade the SSD and was curious what the performance numbers might be in this machine.

I know that the stock SSDs in these models are known to reliably fail over time so it might be worth my while as it's otherwise in excellent condition for something that's a decade old.

For reference, here's a benchmark I just did:

It does actually seem a bit slower than I expected for a PCIe x2 SSD.

If your MacBook Air is a mid-2013, any SSD from the mid-2013 to 2017 13" Air, mid-2013 to early 2015 11" Air, and late 2013 to early 2015 13" Pro will work so a used drive may be better than the OWC which is a nvme drive with an apple compatible connector.

That's an excellent suggestion actually!

For what it's worth, the OWC drive I think does outperform the stock Apple ones and I think are the same or cheaper than what eBay has to offer.

I'm not sure the OWC would outperform the Samsung ssubx drives for speed or battery life. NVMe drives don't support all of the energy saving functions of macOS.

A limiting factor would be the PCIe bus in the air too.

I picked up a 256 GB SSUBX drive from eBay. I will let you know how it goes when I receive it. Thanks for the suggestion

Took a while to arrive but it's in and the results speak for themselves:
