Hey all, my 2014 15" MacBook Pro charger is about to die (exposed internal wiring on the magsafe side of the brick). It needs to be replaced ASAP.

  1. Anyone have experience with 3rd party chargers? (Also, 60 or 85W?)
  2. I have a MacBook charger from a 2011 MacBook somewhere. Will this work?
  3. Anyone else have this problem? It's the 2nd MacBook charger I've needed to buy.
  4. Is there any such thing as a USB-C to Magsafe adaptor? (Then I could buy the new charger?)
  5. Just for future ref, is there any solution for adding magsafe to a USB-C MBP? Some sort of adaptor. (I use the new MBP's all the time and I freaking miss magsafe.)

1. Don’t.
2.Probably not MagSafe 2, so no.
3.Yes, it happened with my previous MB Air. Not a problem with the new Macs.
4.No
5.There is but I would not connect my expensive Mac to a 3rd party cable.

I agree with all of these points. Especially #5. I would never try to spend a few bucks less but potentially jeopardize my $2k+ laptop. I'd rather spend 15 or 20 extra dollars or whatever and get the Apple brand one. If something goes wrong with an official Apple charger, it can be Apple's problem, not yours. Also beware buying "authentic" apple chargers on Amazon. Just go straight to the source. It's so not worth it to do otherwise.

As a follow up to #1, for a 15" mbp you want the 85W charger.

Could someone tell me why using an office Apple Magsafe 1 charger with an official Apple Magsafe 1 to Magsafe 2 adapter to charge a retina Macbook Pro is bad? I've been doing this for years with no problems at all.
