Hey everyone!

Trying to make up my mind here about something, and throwing it out to the community for opinions.

I have a 2014 15'' (base) MBP, which I bought new (which ironically was last time I was really active on this site), and has been a rock for almost 5 years. It's about time for me to upgrade, not because there is anything really wrong with it (besides an aging battery that will need to be replaced soon), but because I work in music technology and having a reliable up to date workhorse is necessary. I can't have something failing in a live performance situation.

My original thought, was to buy the 2018, dock the 2014 and use it as my desktop work station.

Now I'm thinking it might be prudent to sell the 2014, dock the 2018, and buy an ipad for anything not work related.

I would be fine if I was able to get another 2 years out of this machine, so I'm wondering what experience others have had with the 2014. How many have failed? How many are still going strong? If I dock it and leave it plugged in, should that extend the life of the machine (besides the battery, which is already dying)?

Thoughts?

I can't speak on your model specifically, but I do own a top spec 2013 15 inch model. Still going strong. I use it as a desktop when I plug into my at home audio workstation for a few hours a day (Ableton, Photoshop work mainly) and then take it off of there and DJ 3-4 nights a week.

In my case, it's been getting heavy usage since the day I purchased it. Had the logic board replaced once before the Applecare ran out but thats about it. Although I get where you're coming from. I recently purchased a 2018 MBP with similar specs to the one I have now (a bit more hard drive space and doubled the ram this time around) Slowly setting up the new MBP the way I want it to be by cutting out files I don't need and being a bit more organized this time around. I'll continue to use my 2013 until it kicks and the repair cost doesn't justify it.

Yeah, heavy use daily here as well, with no issues whatsoever (until the battery started dying at ~30%). I just don't want to get stuck holding the bag if it fails. I might be over thinking things though.
