I have made a terrible mistake, I bought a 5k on eBay I, got him to change it from Action to buy it now. it was up for auction I said I was interested in it and got him to change it to buy it now. The thing is he put in the advert he says * I bought a new one as this machine was "Hanging" I had it full of photos, the drive has been wiped.* I asked him what it meant but he did not answer. But I nought it anyway, but I was worried about it saying*Hanging*i I looked it up computing, a hang or freeze occurs when either a process or system ceases to respond to inputs. A typical example is when the computer's graphical user interface (such as Microsoft Windows) no longer responds to the user typing on the keyboard or moving the mouse. The term covers a wide range of behaviours in both clients and servers and is not limited to graphical user interface issues. Hangs have varied causes and symptoms, including software or hardware defects, such as an infinite loop or long-running uninterruptible computation, resource exhaustion (thrashing), under-performing hardware (throttling), external events such as a slow computer network, misconfiguration, and compatibility problems. The fundamental reason is typically resource exhaustion: resources necessary for some part of the system to run are not available, due to being in use by other processes or simply insufficient. Often the cause is an interaction of multiple factors, making "hang" a loose umbrella term rather than a technical one. I message d him hoping he had not sent off yet, he had, I asked him to cancel it because of what I found out about it Hanging this is the message he sent back to me. Message from the seller
It states its hanging in the advert.
The item has this morning been boxed, labelled and taken to be posted.
I have taken you at your word and removed the advert, re-listed it with a buy it now price so that e-bay are not upset then as agreed you bought it.
It's going to look awful if it now appears back on e-bay and will affect the price.
condition
Used: An item that has been previously used. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended
How can it be fully functionally when he says he says it has a *Hanging problem?*
What I would like to know is will eBay side with him because he put it in there about *hanging*in his advert, I would not have bought it if I had checked it out myself what it meant. He put this message under the advert*
I have had so many e-mails and questions so I state this openly. And stated the price he would accept for it. And get does say he is new to eBay. What are my chances of eBay siding with me bearing in mind he said it was hanging? I have made a terrible mistake.

Is this a problem I could sort out if I did keep it? If he had said it was not working properly, I would have passed it by. It should have rung a bell him not saying it was running well for you spec of it should, I was taken with the 64gb which thinking about it is overkill for me. I feel like an idiot.

Sounds like an erase and reinstall is needed, or it could be GPU failure.
I have heard that Gpu can go bad. The problem of buying second hand from a private buyer. Just hope I can get a refund was impressed by it having 64gb of ram but that is total overkill for me.he did not put any photos of the screen on there well only one with the screen off. I have been a complete mug buying it.

Will Paypal stop the money going through as it was only yesterday afternoon? I cancel it at 12 noon today he must just have posted it before that.

I agree it's disingenuous to list it as 'hanging' but also as functional, but if you asked him to change the listing I'm not sure who eBay will side with.

Why did you buy something that you knew was not "100%" ??
Lesson learned, I hope.

NEXT TIME, buy something you know is good.
Apple refurbished would be a good idea.

Yes but he should have put that is wasn,t working as it should. If he does not give me a refund I will give him a negative response..The guy was new to selling and a private seller. Plus the fact someone will buy it And they could have the know-how to fix it.

It sort of depends what it means by "hanging"... one thing if it works but occasionally hangs / hiccups (in which case, maybe a reformat / reinstall could fix), vs if it doesn't even boot up properly into macOS. Which I guess you can't fully tell until you receive it.

That being said, Ebay tends to be very buyer-friendly. If you start a return process (especially if the "hanging" situation is one where it doesn't even boot), Ebay will likely side with you and give you the refund.

Thanks for that the fact is that he says his bought another machine that should have been the red flag for me
This a message from him about the condition
There are no dents, dugs scratches, etc beyond anything you would anticipate as a used item, it is fine, the fact it is back in its original packaging and the original box should speak volumes about its condition and how it has been looked after. And yes to 64 rams I am not sure what means *IT IS Fine*? He seems a decent guy.

I'll offer a suggestion.

The 5k iMac has easily removable RAM via the door on the back.
Open up the RAM door, and see what's inside.

You said 64gb?
I'm guessing that means 4 16gb DIMMs?

OK, then try this.
TAKE ALL THE RAM OUT.
See if there are "2 pairs" (2 DIMMs that look the same).

What you want to do is "sort the RAM out", then PUT BACK IN JUST 2 of them.

Close the door, boot it up, and see how it runs.

If you get a hang, then power down and SWAP OUT the 2 DIMMs for the other two, and repeat.

Maybe the hangs are coming from bad RAM, or perhaps 1 set of DIMMs doesn't work well with the other set.

Can a Mac hang be unfixable once you get it? or is that just one of those things you have to put up with?
I Have made the mistake of buying one on eBay the guy says he had to get a new computer because of*Hanging he says he had loads of photos on there IMAC is a 5k 2015 surely to have that problem for a five year old computer is bad.
I did not know what it meant then it was too late
I have a Mac Mini 2012 and never had any problems with it hanging
I just use it for basic stuff

Do you have the iMac now? If yes, is it hanging when you use it?
No, not yet. The thing is I will have to put an OS before I find out. And if it is hanging I will have all the aggro of taking it back for the new buyer. I could get in touch with the seller and ask him what is exactly hanging when I asked him about it he did not answer the question. The mare fact he said he had to get a new one makes me think the problem must be bad, he said it was boxed up so I can only think he had not used it for some time. I can only think that it is something to do with the photos on there it must have been full of them. He only got 1,026.00 for the furniture he was selling.he was expecting 2k the lot, the lot. The guy must be short of money.was circa 10k new.

Sounds like the seller is playing dumb or my be very Mac illiterate. I have friends who are not techno-savvy at all. When they have problems and call me for help, the first thing they say is "It doesn't work" which basically tells me nothing. After hearing this phrase, I have to start my interrogation lol

I think you are right there whether he is one of the two. I am not very tech myself. Yes, I tried to find a video of Carey Holzman who said that* Doesn't sn,t work*and basic stuff. like that.
I take it the seller did not take it somewhere to be tested. Why wouldn,t someone do that? Here's an old video by Carey.https://youtu.be/PBdkuMCM4vs?t=22 :):)I enjoy this guys videos
