The 5400 RPM drive is a joke, and a poor joke at that. It's akin to those automobile dealers advertising a car for $12,999 when that model has a standard transmission, no AC, an AM radio, and windows with crank handles. They know nobody will want that, so it's an opportunity to up-sell to a higher priced bundle.

I was waiting for this upgrade to get an iMac for my son high school but I guess I will just pass and get him a 13" MBP instead. The lack of SSD and the ridiculous Fusion drive update just adds too much $ for a teenager computer use. The MBP is at least the best bang for the buck.
Apple dropped the ball here.

or get a dell xps 15 laptop, with a 1tb fusion like drive, that weighs under 4lbs, includeds usb 3, thunderbolt 3, and a 4k screen with 100% adobe color, AND a geforce 960m gpu for just ~150 bucks more.

Man, the media is really skewering them on the hard drives this year, and rightfully so. There is no way this kind of negative press is worth the $20 savings per model, or whatever it is the 24GB SSD would cost them had it been standard in all the base configurations.

What? Apple downgraded the 1TB fusion drive from 128GB SSD to just 24GB SSD?
Just .... Why?

This is just nuts. I couldn't believe it.
After seeing this, I had to check it out on the Apple site stating that the 1TB fusion drive has a reduced SSD capacity (24GB).

This $100 upgrade would not be worth it, that 24 GB would fill up too quickly. I guess it would be more for OS only stuff.

On my late 2012 27" iMac, I got the 1TB fusion drive option, and it has been pretty good, I wish I would have gone with the 256 SSD option. Having 24GB on the new fusion drive just seems like a waste to me.

Really the worst part about Apple even offering a HD as an option is that the used market ends up getting flooding by these awful computers. So picture trying to buy a used iMac in 2017 and many of your choices are going to be a 5400RPM hard drive.

"Apple did change how the Fusion Drive works in 2015. To allow for a lower-cost Fusion Drive option, Apple paired a 1TB hard drive with a 24GB SSD. In the past, the 1TB Fusion Drive matched a 1TB standard hard drive with a 128GB SSD. Now, if you want the 128GB SSD, you'll need to have a 2TB or 3TB Fusion Drive offering. "

And there's me telling myself I wouldn't get riled up. What an absolute crock of ****, it's an utter joke that a company worth this much and who claim to be about user experience/specs dick their consumers so hard.

It's reminiscent of RIM, they're just taking advantage of their users who are already in the ecosystem. If they made pricing decisions/spec limitations that the user suffers for back in 2000, you'd be sure as hell that Apple wouldn't be where they are today.

It's getting beyond stupid now. **** off Tim Cook, bring back some passion to the products, screw the monsterous profits, and make every Apple product available as nice as it could be for that price point. You know, so people are comforted in the fact that any Apple product they buy is well thought out and not crippled with planned obsolecence. How it used to be, how it should be, and how you claim Apple is. Get your heads out of your asses.

(never thought I'd fall into the 'Steve wouldn't have done this' trap)

Get ready for the pitchforks and the public fire my friend.
Talking trash about such a courageous man and such an innovative company in 2015.
I'm only 26 and I remember not looking puzzled when analysing an Apple spec sheet comparison. And boy was information scrace "back in the day"...

Macs are as exciting as washing machines these days and only ever interesting when your current machine breaks down. However, it doesn’t feel good to spend money on Apple products anymore when it’s all so painfully average. At least OS X is still great, but that’s mostly because of the groundwork that was done years ago.

Pretty disappointed as well to see apple reduce the size from 128 to 24. What are the repercussions in this case? 24gb should still be enough for the often used programs to be cached right?

Has anyone tried running OS X in a VM on non-Apple hardware? That might become the future for many of us if this trend towards mediocre Apple hardware continues. It's not all about the display, Apple.

Black screen bezel. Black logo. WHITE KEYS AND MOUSE. This is a travesty.

Apple will be out of business in a month.

I am completely serious about one of the two assertions above.

What's the fuss about USB-C? I know it is on the new rMB, but none of my current hardware or atleast anything hanging in the aisles of my Best Buy has this connector. I think it would be better for the new connector to show up on the peripherals side first; rather than hardwired on my device. That way I can use my current hardware without a dongle; rather than force each and every connection to go through a dongle. At some future tipping point, the new connector can make its way into the hardware itself.

4k display driven off integrated intel GPU? $50 upsell for magic trackpad 2 ( it's got force touch! )? 21" model, once again, limited in storage BTO options ( only 1tb 5400 or 1tb gimped fusion for the low-end ) for no possible reason what-so-ever.

Just like the mini, the 21" model continues to be gimped to the point of stupidity. Looks like another year with the hackintosh unless I want to dump another $3k on Apple this year.

All negative comments so far - but they'll still sell fine.

RIM's managers said a similar thing about Blackberry phones back in the day. Not to play the Apple is doomed card, but as soon as you begin to take the proverbial and abuse your position by overcharging consumers wherever you can (ultimately bringing out products with a worse experience), you'll eventually get bitten. With Apple's current financial situation and claimed mentality of never bringing out second-rate products, they should be doing the opposite of what they're doing now - bringing out better and better specs.

These last few 'upgrades' have actually been downgrades - worse hardware to meet some stupid price point and encourage consumers to pay more to get an experience that should've been there as standard. It's proposterous. :(

I wonder if the MacBook Pro will get Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C next year. It does seem odd that Apple didn't include them in the new iMac, but perhaps they see it is more beneficial for notebooks.
It may be most beneficial in the notebooks, but if USB-C doesn't get enough market penetration then it will continue to be difficult to have much choice in accessories for the MacBook.

I suspect the size of the SSD in relation to the portion of the actual drive size (1TB) you don't really gain any performance after a certain point.. Course if Apple would have spelled that out somewhere, it would be easier to understand why they reduced the the size of an SSD in a Fusion drive..

No TB3 and thus no chance of Target Display Mode makes these an instant pass for me. Better luck next time, Apple.

Wait - the new generation of iMacs doesn't have target display mode? That was a KILLER feature and I was just about to buy an iMac for my wife so she could use her work Dell during work on the iMac screen and then use the iMac for personal use.

/sigh Apple
