Hello. I have recently purchased a used 2015 MacBook Pro 15” with few 255 cycles. I haven’t opened the bottom yet but I am fearing that the battery has swollen. It will not lay flat and wobbles. Looking for the best battery to purchase. It doesn’t fall within the recall.

My 2015 also has major battery issues. I think its more serial numbers that Apple has attempted.

Great laptop - still use it after 5 years - has the pre-butterfly keyboard.

Best replacement battery - better than factory batteries:
NewerTech (NuPower) well worth every penny!

Do you have experience with them? Do they come with any cycle? I have looked at the ifixit battery. Just want to make right choice. Update: went ahead with your recommendation.

Yes, replaced many Macbooks from 2012 thru 2017 Airs as well as 2012-2015 MBP.

They come with 1 or 2 cycles and they have as much if not more capacity than the original.

Over the years, ZERO defects or warranty issues - they are much better than the cheap Amazon made in China knockoffs!

Thanks for the help!

See if you can get Apple to cover the repair before you do anything else. Talk to a service advisor and mention how afraid you are that it could burn your house down (unlikely but possible) and how you can't take it on an airplane (very true) and see if they will replace it for free. I replaced the battery in my 2015 four times before I sold it.

Thanks. I did try that route but apple wouldn’t since all the tests ran showed no issues and cycles are low. Of course everything was done over phone. First available appointment to have them physically check it is late January in my area. They wouldn’t even give me a way to just send it in without them seeming it first.

Apple Store will swap your battery for around 129$. Had a terrible experience with a non-Apple solution. I had a third party shop do it and the battery died within a few months. The shop was particularly dishonest, claiming that their battery was better than Apple's. It's not. And Apple will charge you but I suspect the price is at or below cost. Probably the only Apple item where this might be true.

As you can see the battery was swollen. Took less than 30 minutes remove. The adhesive was already pretty weak, so it came out without much work. I just used a plastic pry tool that came with my screwdriver set. New battery arrives Wednesday.

Like i stated in OP i just bought it used. Talking to the previous owner he kept in clamshell mode using MagSafe pretty much at all times, hence the low battery count of 255. He also used it for his development job. So, he never experienced any issues since he had it in a stand most of it’s life.

Lesson, use your laptop as a laptop throughout its life

New battery arrived last night. Installed this morning! Performing optimization now

My older 2015 15" has pretty decent battery life but the service warning has been up for a while, debating whether to ship it off to apple or just replace it on my own. I replaced the battery in my 2010 13" from Ifixit and that battery was really poor in quality and never really worked hence the doubts about 3rd party batteries.

I went with the newertech battery.

Does anybody know when this battery replacement program ends?

Just found my 2015 15 MBP has a swollen battery & it seems to qualify for the program. I’m thinking about selling it later this year and I’d rather hold off replacing the battery till just before I sell it, but I don’t want to completely miss the boat.

Generally these recalls are xx of years after purchase. However, there is no timeframe listed on their official page. Value of a 2 week old battery compared to a 3-5 month battery is minimal. If you want, print this page off in case something changes and they don't allow later this year. https://support.apple.com/15-inch-macbook-pro-battery-recall Highly doubt it.
