My current MBP is getting long in the tooth and I'm looking to upgrade to a 15" 2015. Top rated sellers on eBay are offering quite an array of choices at a very wide price range. I've been told to look for i7 and SSD. I'm seeing terms that I'm not familiar with such as Radeon and R9 and 370X. Some mention dual GPU. Options include 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 Could someone help me narrow down my options? My computer needs are fairly basic.

Don't get the 2.8 Ghz Modell I would suggest. 2.5 Ghz is good enough and runs a lot quieter.

See here:

I just bought a 2.8 Ghz 370X Modell with 1 TB stock SSD.

If you want to use external displays (with high resolutions) and have a little extra power, get the R9 370X.

Intel Iris Pro 5200 supports:
  • Up to 3840 by 2160 pixels at 30Hz or 4096 by 2160 pixels at 24Hz (HDMI)

Thunderbolt with Radeon R9 M370X
  • Up to 5120 by 2880 at 60Hz

Don't care too much about SSD. It's user upgradeable. And especially so in the 2015 15" model because it has PCIe 3.0 with 4 lanes. There is a thread about that.

This is solid advice. I don't know what the listing for dual GPU's stands for....

Some of those 2015 models don't have a discrete GPU. Not sure of your use case, but if not needed, you'll probably get a better deal on the models without that chip.

The 2015 MacBook Pro 15 only comes with the Core i7 and SSD. The CPU options are 2.2 Ghz and 2.5 Ghz. I am shopping for a 2.8 Ghz myself. I have a 2014 15 (2.2 Ghz) and a 2015 15 (2.5 Ghz). The 2015 has the AMD Discrete graphics. I would go for the Discrete Graphics if you do video-intensive work or run programs that use a lot of RAM or run multiple high-resolution monitors.

The downside of using Intel Integrated with multiple high-resolution monitors is that the the Integrated Graphics uses main memory for storing graphics data while the discrete graphics comes with 2 GB of RAM and uses that. So Integrated Graphics can generate a lot of traffic on the system bus resulting in video pauses if you're doing something else that's bandwidth-heavy.

The model that I'd prefer: 2.8 Ghz, 1 TB SSD, AMD graphics. But I'd take 2.8 Ghz + AMD graphics and any size SSD.

That’s a good point re: external monitors.

Hey, can you report back on the temperatures thread below once you get your 2.8 Ghz? That would be great!

I am in no particular hurry to buy one as I have a 2014 and 2015 that are working fine. This would just be a backup of a backup in case the 2020s are as deficient as the 2016-2019 models. I just look locally on Craigslist daily. If there is an interesting model, then I contact the seller. I am also looking for a good price.
