My 2015 rMBP is running mostly well, could definitely do with a battery replacement but is showing its age lately particularly with any of the latest iPads I've used (no sidecar, universal control)

I'd like to hang onto it for a bit longer though am teetering between getting a new MBA to replace it or possibly get an iPad Pro as a complement/potential replacement.

Also keeping next year's upgrades in mind as some of the rumored features are enticing such as ports and magsafe.

Am I better off keeping/fixing this or upgrading now?

If you're planning on keeping it, it might be worth $199 to get the battery replaced by Apple.
(NOT by a 3rd party, but at a brick-n-mortar Apple Store).

My 2015 MBP is doing fine...

There‘s no reason to replace it if it’s doing the job. A major question is how important is screen size? As fast as the new machines are, if you’re looking for a 15 inch machine, you’re far better off keeping your current machine at least until the new machines come out. That’s assuming you’re using a 15 inch. If it’s a 13, then there’s no real loss.

I plan to Keep my 2015 15" for as long as it receives security updates. The worst case scenario will be 3 more years. Then I will update to Apple Silicon M3X whatever.

2015 rMBPs will get Monterey that probably will remain supported until the end of 2024.

As you mention that you would like to check out the next iterations of Apple Silicon, you could keep your machine for a while.

Battery replacement as recommended by @Fishrrman is a good idea (if it is still offered), I got a new one for my Early 2015 by Apple that way.

My 2015 is going strong, although my battery was replaced by apple as part of a recall program a few years ago. As far as an iPad goes, my opinion is that they are good for media consumption but fall way short for serious work (spreadsheets for example).

Honestly it really depends on your situation, wants, needs, etc. For me, I plan on keeping my 15" for as long as it is running well. If I need to repair anything in the future I would if it the cost is reasonable. If it cost like $900 bucks I might look into a new laptop but if it's like $200 I might but just go for it and keep my current device.

Now, if Apple releases a must have feature or something amazing in the future, I may upgrade. I love OLED, so if Apple does OLED soon I would get it.

I did not find the 16" compelling enough to upgrade. The pros are nice, but I enjoy the smaller footprint, lighter weight, and thinner design of my 15"

I have the 2019 model!

Not by much, but it's actually the other way round:

Dimensions
2015 15" 0.71 x 14.13 x 9.73
2019 16" 0.64 x 14.09 x 9.68

Avg Weight
2015 15" 4.49 lbs (2.04 kg)
2019 16" 4.3 lbs (2.0 kg)

In case it helps, I've just had my 2015 MBP repaired (the battery had swollen sufficiently that the lid wouldn't shut!) by Apple at a cost of £200 (adjust for your currency!).

Apple list the Early 2015 MBPs' trade-in value as £180. So I feel I'm even so far, and that it's worth far more than £180 to me (assuming nothing else goes wrong with it!). It should run Monterey (I checked this before I had it repaired) and I'm hoping that it will now last another few years as a secondary machine.
