Hello gents, I want to expand my main work horse with more storage, but the biggest complain I been reading is a lot of aftermarket uses more battery than the Samsung ssd shipped with mbp, do anyone have any recommendation for ssd that have same or less idle/load voltage and not slower than the ssd shipped with mbp

To save you from having to read 6,834 posts from that thread above, just read Post 6834

This is exactly what I did with my mid-2015 MBP 15" a couple weeks ago. Works perfectly.

As far as battery draw, I think most modern NMVe SSD's are pretty much the same. I just don't hear/read as much about power comparisons in testing like I used to years ago. I personally would not worry so much about power consumption and focus on speed and reliability.

yeah i was looking at that tread and didnt get past the first page. right now i'm eyeballing the pny cs2130 which i have a dell coupon for.

good to know that all the modern ssd basically have the same ballpark draw.

Just curious is the coupon a generic coupon or some sort of Dell Rewards just for your account? How much is the CS2130 after using the coupon?

I see that PNY has a CS3030 also, which is much more $$ on dell.com, but only $10 more on Amazon compared to the CS2130. I'm cannot see what the difference is...

One more thing...I used one of those adapters from Amazon (as you will need to), and at first I tried a 1TB Inland Premium (Microcenter brand SSD, but very fast) and had performance issues in the MBP. I read that some NVMe SSD's don't work well in the MBP. The Inland was very inconsistent on speed tests. I switched to the Sabrent and speed tests were fast and consistent. I also tried a Samsung 970 EVO (500GB) and it worked well also.

they gave me a 100 bucks gift card when i bought a u2720q monitor a month ago, it expires in sept so i had to use it before then, i went with the cs2130 because the CS3030 is out of stock til sept, and my only other choice was the crucial p1 which had a slower speed probably due to older controller, i used price match and got them lower it to same price as amazon and office depot. so all in all i ended up getting a 2tb pny cs2130 for 160 after 100 bucks coupon. hopefully the mbp is not picky about pny and works just fine.

i'm also still looking at the m.2 adapter, i see they have a long version and a short one. do you know anything about that?

This is the one I bought. It works fine and quality looked good, lots of good reviews (and it was cheapest!):

I know Sintech had the short one a while ago, but now they are all 2280 length adapters. Not sure what advantage that gives, and I would question whether a double-sided SSD stick would fit.

I saw that Sintech one, but it says "Macbook Air and Mac Pro", not MacBook Pro. Probably a typo? Nowhere in the product description does it say Macbook Pro.

BUT, some of the customer reviews say they used it on a mid-2015 MBP and it works.

Sintech is a familiar name when it comes to these adapters, so you're paying for that. My $6.99 one works.

The Sintech adapter that works in the 2013 to 2017 Air will work in the later 2013 to 2015 MacBook Pro. I have used the same adapter in an early 2015 13" Air and mid-2014 13" Pro.

ok the pny cs2130 is in! had a few hickups due to my inexperience but now i'm indexing and testing any possible battery drain. so far no sleep/wakeup issues, black magic test puts this at 1400 read/write, its a far cry from the advertised 3500/3000 but i know there is a pcie limitation going in, honestly i dont do anything crazy to warrant that speed anyway. side note this pny cs2130 is also 1-2c cooler than the apple ssd that came with this mbp. now my only trouble is how to consolidate two photo library since prior i had to offload it to a external.

follow up 2

ok im swapping out the pny cs2130, this thing is draining my battery like a fat kid eating cake. i'm thinking of swapping it for a intel 660p i have in my other pc. supposedly that has a very efficient power draw. what do you guys think

I was using an Intel 600p in an early 2015 Air. It was around the same speed as the Samsung 128 SSUBX drive that it replaced which is fine with me since I don't need a lot of speed since I do not read and write large files.

Battery life was 10% to 15% than the original Apple drive but I could live with that. It also ran cool.

so basically max 9 hours vs 10 with original ssd, yeah i can live with that too, right now this pny ssd, last 2 hours it went down 30%, so im basically getting hit around 30% battery lost.

Battery life also depends on the tasks you are running on battery.

I only used my Air for email, internet, and office apps. No movies, YouTube, or photo/video editing.

its mainly for work, with occasional youtube and music, def no video or photo editing. i haven't change my commputing habit yet the battery drain is very noticeable.
