I believe Kaby Lake's superiority in efficiency and power negate the potential for that kind of noise..

Do you still believe that slogan from Intel about Kaby Lake being much more efficient? Some desktop Kaby Lake are hotter than its Skylake counterparts, and remember, KL is same lithography as SKL, and they share the same architecture. The differences are minimal, the only significant improvement is a new SpeedStep™ technology. And they aded HEVC hardware decoding, yes.

So I don't believe they are much more efficient. Intel needs time because the 10nm are a tricky step, and Kaby Lake is the pretext to have one more year.

Thanks @Jamalogo10 . Some users on this forums have reported similiar fan noise issue even on the 2017 nTB. I'm reading that the TB model has better architecture for cooling than a nTB one. I have just read on this forums.

You don't have to believe it. It is a fact. Look at the battery life on the TB 16 vs. the TB 17 you see gains of 1-2 hours across the board. Plus a 20-25% performance boost in the same form factor. So what do you mean?

Secondly, where did you hear Apple will release 10nm on their computers within a year? 2019 is far more likely. Can you explain the advantages of 10nm vs 14?

@DaveMike11 The 17 TB has better architecture because it requires more energy... to power the touch bar. The touch bar is still in it's first iteration. Stay away from all apple products that implement something completely new.
The fan noise is not an issue, TRUST ME. Unless you're doing hyperintensive tasks the fan noise is zero, if at all noticeable.

And let's be honest, the 13s aren't designed to be a focused work station/gaming computer.

According to Notebookcheck, from the '17 TouchBar model:

<<The Kaby Lake processor is manufactured in an optimized process (14 nm+) compared to its Skylake predecessor, so it should consume less power. We expected longer battery runtimes from the new model, but this is not the case in our Wi-Fi test. The previous model still lasted almost 9.5 hours at an adjusted luminance of 150 nits, but the current model only manages ~8:40 hours. We repeated the test three times, but the result was the same with a couple of minutes' tolerance.>>

<<This trend continues in the video test, where the short movie Big Buck Bunny (H.264, FHD) runs in a loop at 150 nits. The result of almost 7 hours is not only beaten by the predecessor (8 hours), but all the other comparison devices are significantly more enduring as well>>

Maybe you're right, but raw data from the '17 TB models, compared to their '16 counterpart, points to one hour less of battery life in Kaby Lake CPUs... Believe me, I'd like the KL to be a more efficient iteration of Intel's CPUs. Maybe the higher frequencies are the explanation.

Secondly, where did you hear Apple will release 10nm on their computers within a year? 2019 is far more likely. Can you explain the advantages of 10nm vs 14?

And regarding 10nm, I did not say anything about advantages or disadvantages (obviously it will be much more power efficient), I only said that it seems to be difficult for Intel to deliver suitable 10nm CPUs in time, and in order to keep selling its products, they came up with Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, etc... We are having up to four generations of 14nm CPUs, and it is because Intel has difficulties in order to deliver its 10nm Cannonlake on time. So I suspect -maybe I'm wrong- there is little innovation in Kaby Lake, aside from HEVC hardware encoding/decoding and a better SpeedStep™ technology.

Hello Everyone,

I need some help and recommendation from the experts here. I'm buying my first Macbook. All these years I have been an windows user. At home i have had all apple products except macbook pro.

I decide to buy Macbook Pro now. However I'm confused which models to go. I'm a IT professional. I'm a photo hobbyist. I need for regular use. I do use photoshop & lighroom and Premier Pro for 1080p video editing. I'm not a paid professional. Although its nice to do the photo editing in the 15" mbp. But I'm limiting my budget not to cross $1500 and stick with 13"mbp for general use and use my windows PC which is already setup for my photo/video editing works.

The following are the 3 options i have now. I need your help to suggest me which one would work for me.
1. 2016 13" TB
Model: MNQF2LL/A
Specs: Apple 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, Dual-Core Intel Core i5 2.90GHz, 512GB PCIe SSD,Intel Iris Graphics 550 - Space Gray
Price: $1399

2. 2016 13" nTB
Model : MLL42LL/A
Specs: Apple 13"MacBook Pro with Retina Display,2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5,8GB RAM,256GB PCIe SSD,Intel Iris Graphics540-Space gray
Price: $1050

3. 2017 13" nTB
Model: MPXT2LL/A
Specs: Apple - MacBook Pro® - 13" Display - Intel Core i5 - 8 GB Memory - 256GB Flash Storage- Space Gray
Price: $1399

Thanks in advance,

Quick question, I am also in the process of buying a new mac book pro and just wondering where did you see these as the prices are very good. Thanks

The 2017 MBP nTB model was available at Best Buy last week & now its back to the full price. The 2016 models was on sale at Frys 2 weeks back as they were clearing out them.

Kaby lake all the way ...
Thank you @blackberry. Do you have the 2017 Kaby Lake MBP ?

Yes, picked it up 2 days ago. Had the 2016 MBP pro 13 and 2016 Macbook before it.

It sounds like we need to get the applecare+ if we buy the 2016 MBP Touchbar models to be safe.

My wife is kind of in this situation. Any help is apprecaited:

2017 MacBook Pro ntb 128gb base model - $1100
2016 Macbook pro TB 256gb - $1249

She wants to start video editing. $1300 is her budget for the laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Go the TB version tbh, high wattage CPU & dual fan design

Also, 128GB is really limiting. You'll need to get more storage externally to handle all the video.
