Thinking of upgrading my 15 inch 2016 i7 MBP to a 2018 with 32 gigs of ram. Not sure if I want to go with the i9 or not. Just wondering has anyone around here upgraded from a 2016 and what are your thoughts?
Is it worth the upgrade?

The benchmarks show the 2018 being so much faster...

(those are the numbers Ars got before the patch so it might be even faster now)

I upgraded from a 2017 and couldn’t be happier. I think the 2018 (base 15”) is the best MacBook Pro I have ever owned, hands down. I’d have loved to upgraded to 32gb, but my time constraint wouldn’t allow for it. I suppose depending on what you do the i9 would be a huge jump in performance. For me though, with Adobe CC and JavaScript, it wasn’t a concern.

Which 2018 MacBook are those numbers? i9?
I’ve tried searching, but just want to verify that theirs not a big difference in the gpu from 16 to 18?
You really only hear people say that even the 18 gpu is crap so nobody really compares it to any older model..

32 gigs is a must.. I planned on keeping my 16 MacBook for 4-5 years.. and honestly. With what I do now. I just need more. Trying to run final cut and photoshop at the same time on 2 4K monitors just gets unbearable. Becomes slow and definitely notice some frame drops. I think it’s a combo of ram and GPU.. Now. I do notice frame drops even just from photoshop and safari open on the monitors.
I know.. I should get an iMac but! I just can’t.. I need the portability.

Ars posted some GPU results and they weren't much of an improvement

I can see why you need 32gb, certainly. I think you know what you want, it just comes down to do you want to spend the money.

I was hesitant. I kept going back and forth in the cart as far as storage space goes. I purchased the 2.6 i7 with 1 tb and 32 gigs of ram space gray.. but then 30 minutes later.. I canceled that order. And went with a silver 2.6 32gb of ram 512 hard drive.. I just couldn’t justify spending another $400 on hard drive space.. when I’ve been trying to move everything to cloud and external hard drives anyway..

Seems like a solid purchase! I’m sure you’ll be happy with it. Even with only 256 in mine I have plenty of room free. I keep most of my stuff either in iCloud or Dropbox. Works perfectly fine.

What is the lead time on shipping that config?

I'm upgrading from a 2017 15" 2.9GHz, mostly taking it for a test run, not sold on keeping it yet. Do you find it any faster doing mundane things like loading applications, or isn't really just in your workflow where it shines?

I’m not sure that opening apps (other than illustrator / photoshop) or booting is any faster, though it seems file transfers have jumped a bit in speed. With my workflow however I’ve not seen a single stutter with multiple apps open, swiping between multiple desktop “spaces”.

I’m extremely curious to install Mojave on it, but since there have been quite a few mixed results going back to HS, I’m holding off until the next dev beta to see if that has been ironed out.

I had Mojave on my 2017, totally wasn't worth it to me, the egpu support was shoddy, and generally I couldn't disconnect and my computer would just freeze and I would have to do a hard reboot. Also, Mojave couldn't pick up on my 3rd party webcam and continuity wouldn't work for phone calls. Ended up wiping and restoring from time machine.

I had it on my 2017 for a bit as well. Mostly to check out dark mode. Stacks looks neat but I don’t keep a single thing on my desktop (too ocd for it). But with the 2018 and the T2 chip some people have had serious problems trying to revert back. Hard pass on that.

I spent the extra 8 bucks on expedited shipping. Should be here Monday at the latest

Also. I don’t know anybody knew this or not.. but online. You don’t have to be a student to get the discount...

Damn. That’s impressive for a custom config!

Yeah. The only computers that are a week out was those with the i9 them

I was kind of hoping I wouldn't see this since but thanks for this info. I have a 2017 15" and it's my main computer paired with a 1080Ti in an eGPU chassis since my gaming PC in is storage. Before, I was fine with waiting for a revamp due to the "issues" but since those have been more or less resolved, I kinda wanting to get the 2018 for the performance boost.

Decisions, decisions...

My bad. I’ll delete my post and you can pretend not to have read it. Deal?
