Hey all.

I have been considering purchasing a new (2019) MBP to replace my ageing 2008 MB but stumbled across the refurb store today where a couple of older models grabbed me. One is a Oct '16, the other June '17.

I like the idea of the PCIe based storage - that means it can be removed and upgraded right? Not soldered in?

Aside from that, would any of you recommend the 2016/2017 models over the 2019 models?
Keyboard issues etc....?

Machine is being used for general web, email, word processing, light photo work.... etc... the bottle neck with my current machine is the CPU (often maxing out to 100%) hence needing a new machine.

Cheers

PCIe is just the type of internal storage tech. It is very fast but it is not removable if you’re looking at any model with a Touchbar; this is Apple. Similarly RAM is non-user upgradable.

I would definitely recommend at least the 2017 model as the 2016 keyboard was definitely the most troublesome. Who knows what keyboard you would get if you purchased a refurb 2016; it could be one of the newer models but who really knows. The 2017 keyboard models definitely had their fair share of issues as well but it was much less common than a 2016 model. The keyboard situation in all honesty is a confusing nightmare.

Personally I’d probably recommend the new 2019 model with 2 TB ports if you are able to live with just 2 ports. Aside from having just 2 ports, it would be hard to discern between that model and the higher end 4TB port model for a lot of users who don’t push the limits on their machines. It really was a pretty good upgrade for 2019 for the price.

Sorry shoulda said. Looking at 13"

If 2019, 128GB is out of the question. 512GB is above budget so 256GB will be the one I go for.
If storage can be upgraded in the '16/'17 models then that's not a worry.

I just explained that storage is not upgradable. The only new gen model that has upgradable storage is the 2016 and the 2017 Non-Touchbar MBP AFAIK, which I wouldn’t recommend due to their processors.

2019 13 base with a bump in storage to 256 is your best price to value option. Better (SUPPOSEDLY) keyboard and newer silicon than a 2016 or 17, including T2 security (many people on these forums hate it, but I find it a plus).

Not sure if you were looking at the NON TouchBar 2016 and 2017’s, but a 2019 will get you the touchbar.

Sorry @Trey M for some reason I missed your message....
Thanks for your input, yes I guess that a new 2019 would be the way to go then.
Cheers
Yes, don’t out think the room. Just go for a 256 2019.

Solid choice, I think you’ll be very satisfied.

Personally, to any friend or family, I would never recommend anything less than 256GB Storage and 16GB of RAM. It is 2019, these are thresholds that almost any user should have for their primary computer if you spend a decent amount of time on it and you do more than open Excel and browse Facebook.

Resale value will also reflect that you have a much better machine than the base model. Especially if you’re planning on keeping it 2+ years, I would highly recommend 256GB/16GB minimum. This is just my singular opinion of course, and I’m sure some may disagree, but I do know that if you get a 256GB/16GB you’ll be very likely never be left ‘wanting’ or regretful , which is a good thing when spending $1500+. You only get one shot to get it right due to lack of upgradability.

It’s quite hilarious that each the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 ALL had different keyboards. It’s beyond complicated trying to explain all the nuances to a less-than savvy consumer (say an older family member). With the keyboard debacle, it’s always been easiest to recommend the ‘latest’ model, though some of that was alleviated when they launched the keyboard warranty program for all models.

I am also very aware of all the T2 issues, though it does seem a lot of the noise around this has died out, likely indicating that a lot of the bugs have been fixed. It’s definitely an issue that’s still out there but not sure how concerned I’d be about it these days. It is nice that you can disable a lot of the T2 security features, which for a lot of users has alleviated any crashes.

2015 12” MacBook - First generation Butterfly keyboard. I bought 2, returned them both because they both have multiple keys with out of the box issues. Eventually bought the 2016 12” model and that one is flawless to this day.

2016 MacBook Pro (13/15) - ‘Second generation’ Butterfly keyboard. According to Apple, mechanism was modified as 2016 unibody allowed for more key travel.

2017 MacBook Pro (13/15) - Never officially indicated as a different keyboard model by Apple, but teardowns found the bottom portion of the key caps had been slightly modified. I personally had both a 2016 and 2017 MBP and the keyboard feel was slightly different.

2018 MacBook Pro (13/15) & 2018 MacBook Air - ‘Third generation’ Butterfly keyboard. By this time Apple had finally admitted issues (with only 2016/2017 models) and advertised 2018 as the ‘quieter’ keyboard model. Basically they added a silicone layer to prevent debris from entering the keyboard mechanism; this also changed the sound output of the keystrokes. This is what I currently have and is my favorite on the bunch in terms of keyboard feel.

2019 MacBook Pro(13/15) & 2019 MacBook Air - Still a ‘Third generation’ Butterfly keyboard, but now ‘with an updated material’. I honestly think Apple just didn’t want to release a ‘4th gen’ due to how bad that press release would look. Oh, and even 2019 models (and 2018) are now covered by the keyboard program. 2019 model is the only I haven’t owned personally, apparently feel is similar but slightly different than 2018 model.

Now try to go explain to your grandma which model is best for her. Lol.

with electronics its always best to save up for the latest models.. like if you cant afford the 2019 maby continue save for the 2020 :)

There's always good deals on the refurb site. If you're considering buying new, I'd still look at 2018 refurbs to see what you can get for similar money, especially as the 2018 models can get the 2019 replacement keyboard if you have any issues.
