CR isn't going to save anyone from getting screwed over. I had an iPhone 4 and the antenna was not an issue for me. Regardless, what CR reports isn't going to have a major impact on the MBP sales. However, it seems that Apple has usually been correct about battery life claims in previous generations and across it's product lines so it's odd that they could have been so wrong about this. Someone dropped the ball if battery life is so dramatically less than promised.

Consumer Reports has 7 million subscribers, and sells a number of magazines at stores and newsstands, probably heavily based on what is on the front cover. Apple has around 7.4% of the pc market share. So that is a potential of 518,000 Mac computers that could be purchased by Consumer Reports readers. I don't think that is inconsequential.

What does this even mean?

I think it means he didn't like what I had to "say" (wouldn't be the first nor the last one in that department). But to carry his theory forward in a fun way, imagine Tim Cook calling a special meeting tomorrow morning after reading this person's comment and handing out the latest edition of Consumer Reports magazine. He tells everyone to forget anything they've been working on up until that moment so they can focus exclusively on what the blind followers, I mean, um..readers of Consumer Reports want from all of their products. When one guy in the back of the room snickers in defiance of this new policy, he is ordered to eat every page of that Consumer Reports magazine while everyone else watches in silent contemplation of being penalized for insubordination in a similarly demeaning manner.

You say "Sales figures are never released" when the exact opposite is true. Eventually, sales figures are always released to the public although Apple does sometimes group some of their individual products into a major category but rather than talk about something pertaining to the future, check out what Forbes has to say on the matter dealing only with relevant facts that are indisputable even to those adept at spinning rumors into lies:

The point is that Apple has yet to release specific numbers on several products, like the Apple Watch. On the other hand, when Apple does good with a product, they always release very specific numbers typical days after a release. Ask yourself why they are not consistent. The answer is easy, they only publish good numbers, but if not good then use vague terms like "Off the charts", which many think is useless, but actually translate to "sales are embarrassing so we're not going to tell you".

Anyone who still relies on Consumer Reports for reliable input designed to assist in purchasing modern devices should probably consider trading in their diapers for free potty training lessons. This is the same company that gave high ratings to Samsung's subsequently-recalled grenade-phone. So whereas they apparently do have a problem with something they portray as a bad batch of Apple's allegedly inconsistent batteries, they don't seem to have a problem with exploding batteries that weaponize from time to time. Such hypocrisy exists somewhere between ridiculous and absurd. I bet if they tested Apple's batteries and Samsung's batteries by replacing their rectal thermometers with them for a few weeks, Apple's brand would win their unanimous approval and highest recommendation especially since they'd be looking for the charred remains of the other guys long after they've been declared the legal equivalent of burnt toast by their Consumer Reports recommended proctologists.
Same company who said the Samsung Active wasn't waterproof and they were right.

However, back to the topic, Apple should be rightly embarrassed at this, although I'm sure it will/and probably is already being tended to.

Notwithstanding what may be issues at CR I am not going to purchase a new MBP. Although anxiously awaiting the new one it seems that it is more fluff than performance, reliability, and quality.

Over Timmy's leadership, the MacRumors people have slowly been getting more and more frustrated, for good reason, with Apple's empty pipeline, lack of focus, old technology, and increasing prices.

You must avoid all the threads I've been reading. MacRumors has always had a split personality. Sure there are fans around, but I don't think there's been a day in the life of MacRumors in the past five years when people were happy about anything. Everything got panned even when Steve Jobs was around. People have very short and selective memories.

But I bet that the new MacBook "pro"s are the highest profit margin of all Macs, ever. Cheaping a product and raising the price is a good way to monetize customer loyalty. That is one way to maximize short term profits.

I agree, and this is why I'm going to keep using my 2012 rMBP. By the time I need to change, if Apple hasn't cleaned up their act, I'm jumping ship.

Consumer Reports seems to be biased toward low end products generally. I have no direct experience with the Mac CR evaluated. I disregard CS on any product. CR has recommended substandard products in my experience.

My 2016 15-inch MBP is working just fine. Just finished 110 hours of nonstop batch video encoding on Adobe Premiere. The remarkable thing was that the MBP stayed relatively cool. And I have had no problem with battery life with simple everyday tasks like surfing on Safari. Honestly, I don't trust CR's methodology. I have not had good experiences with their recommendations in the past. Just my isolated observations...

I agree with you... in the past the trouble I had was determining who is a troll versus who is genuinely frustrated, and it seems that lately there's really no need for trolls cause people like myself are getting frustrated with Apple, where previously I was always excited about new products and loved to talk them up. Now I find I'm talking them down.

They've recommended every iPhone, minus one. Every iPad. All the Macs 'cept this one and they've deemed the MBA and MBP the most reliable laptops. So does your opinion of their substandard recommendations include the aforementioned products?

Smart move by Tim: Create a subpar MacBook Pro(?) which gets low ratings thus people won't buy. Later declare the notebook (and pro) market is dead and kill the line.

That's actually a brilliant thought. Business do odd things that are unintuitive to customers. I bet Apple will just port Xcode to the iPad and call it quits with computers.

How do you know it's the thinness of the machine that makes the battery life inconsistent? If it's a software issue and they had a bigger battery they would still have a problem with battery life! People jump to conclusions as if they are hardware designers! You really don't know what's going on unless you are an engineer at Apple.

Perhaps there is a revolt against thin laptops going on. But designing "fat" computers would clearly be taking a step backwards. This reminds me of watching old movies made decades ago where the car-phone looked like it was modeled after two very large bricks that were fused at the hip. It almost looks funny to me now to see these guys holding these large devices up to their ears and using them as the prototype of what was later to evolve into our modern smartphone. In a similar way, the modern laptop is evolving until it might become so thin it will be nearly invisible. If it's being referred to as "anorexic" now, it will be more like a skeleton at that time. Of course, I can just imagine the con men lining up on the streets of New York city shouting in carnival-like fashion "Get your brand new Apple Macbook Pro's right here, folks, so thin that you can't even see it so it can't ever get in your way! Hurry 'cause I'm almost sold out (he says as he points to an empty space on the sidewalk)!" I'd counter his cleverness by handing him invisible $100 dollar bills so we'd both go away happy.

I disregard CR. I purchase items not made by Apple. CR has some weird recommendations. CR is not for me.

Before anyone goes crazy about the statement that I buy things not made by Apple think dishwashers, cars etc.

I have my MacBook pro with TB 13" for 2.5 weeks now and absolutely love it. Upgraded from my MacBook Air. Smaller footprint, outstanding screen all in a smaller package. Since the latest OS upgrade I've noticed better battery life. I think its an innovative product and the TB is a cool feature. Sorry to hear that some are having issues. Really happy with mine.

Good. Now learn something from this, Apple.

My thoughts exactly. I was waiting so long for this release but my mouth hit the floor during the event. Such a horrible release by Apple. And the price is a joke.

I ended up getting the new Dell XPS 15. Half the price and the battery lasts all day.

Seeing a trend of Apple users moving to Windows, this is what happens when Apple treats their customers like idiots.

Wake up Apple!

Answering as objectively as you can, how are you liking your XPS 15? It's a beautiful looking machine and I am definitely interested in it.
