I guess I’m the crazy one here. Have a 15inch 2016 touchbar, with no Apple care, and have never purchased it on any of my Apple devices...... As to OP’s question, it really depends on where you’re coming from. I had a 2008 unibody 15, then a 2012 retina 15, and now a 2016 touchbar 15. Personally after having the 2012 style for a few years, I absolutely am loving the updated keyboard, battery life, speeds and look of the 2016 design. But since you are coming from a 2008, I have no doubt you are going to love the retina MBP in general. With that being said, all things considered, if it simply boils down to cost, I would ultimately go with the 2016 as others have said, the price for ~ 3 year old tech doesn’t seem justifiable to me.

Glad to see this so called success story...Just another reminder that there are plenty of machines working fine that people don't post about because they usually have to reason to tell the world that its not broken...OP, take note of this. It goes to show that despite loud people complaining at every turn, there are still good keyboards that aren't broken out there.

Just an update: I received my 2016 15” MacBook Pro today and so far I’m really happy with it. I had tested one of the newer models dozens of times in the store and just didn’t think I’d be as happy with the 2015 and it’s slightly older tech and appearance. The 2016 also came in cheaper than the 2015 so that was a big factor as well. I was concerned about the lack of ports compared to the 2015, specifically the removal of the hdmi port, but turns out you really don’t need ‘em. I hooked my new MBP to my hdtv with a usb-to-hdmi cable (no dongles necessary) and it works great.
Thanks everyone for your input and I’ll let you know if I encounter any issues.

I also just ordered a decent looking used 2015 MBP 13” (8gb ram, 256gb sad) for $800 today, so I can update you all also on how I feel about when I receive it - we can compare and give further details and reviews regarding our purchases.

Sounds like a good deal. Can I ask where you ordered from?

Typically I buy new and take good care of my stuff - my 2011 MBA has been a champion the last 7 years but it's a dinosaur. I work in real estate and literally can not open large planning/construction PDFs on it, lol. I didn't want to put out 1500+ yet when a redesign should be coming between now and June, so this time I bought used from eBay.

I offered $800 on an "A-rated used refurb 2015 MBP 13." Obviously there is a lot of room for errors and omissions here, but I'm just looking for it to last a year + change. I can send the link to the listing if needed.
