It could just be me but with every new mac product I've purchased over the years there was this distinct new mac smell. However, I just got the new Macbook pro 2016 and the smell isn't there. There's actually a slightly bad smell to it. Is it just me or have other owners noticed this?

Probably a different glue holding everything together. Or less of it.

I have never once intentionally smelled my electronics. Is this similar to the new car smell?

The "new Apple smell" is (or rather was) something you couldn't miss 10 years ago - it hit you as soon as you opened the box and was akin to the new car smell.

I've noticed it hasn't really been there for a few years and is probably due to changes in manufacturing processes or materials (it was possibly caused by volatile chemicals in the packaging or plastics used in the products and they're no longer used)

Ah I see. Well I can imagine the disappointment then. Though it's probably better the smell isn't there but if you're used to it, it's a change from what's expected.

I know the 2015 macbooks had the smell. It's not like you had to sniff the machine but it would hit you as you opened the box and used the machine.

imagine buying a new car expecting a "new car smell" and instead it smelt like rubber inside, wouldn't you be curious about what was going on? If not then there is no point in acknowledging you anymore.

The smell was from the electronics being fired up for the first few times. I remember that from back in the 90s when I would get a new desktop. That smell would fill the room. I have a 2015 MBP and I don't think it had it. I don't remember the last computer I even had that had the smell turning it on for the first time.

I'm glad there is less smell with this machine. The factories must be cleaning up their acts. That "new mac smell" from the past is gross. The brain's endorphin release from opening a new package confuses that toxic smell with something pleasurable.

I thought this was a metaphor, so I was genuinely surprised to find you sniff your electronics.

The above was obviously edited by the mods, so I'll make it more politically correct:

To all the critical people: imagine buying a new car expecting a "new car smell" and instead it smelt like rubber inside, wouldn't you be curious about what was going on? If not then there is no point in acknowledging you anymore.

I have to say I noticed the missing 'new mac smell' as well (thought it was just me).

Try to get it exchanged, it doesn't seem to be within spec. Just kidding!
