I have a 2016 15" MBP which has served flawlessly for over a year, in sharp contrast to much of the vitriol directed against the 2016s. I was thinking of buying a 13" as a travel machine to replace my 11" MBA. I'm also looking for something that's a bit easier use around the house when I don't need the four cores of the 15". Most of the time, my 15" is docked to my TBD.

At present, Adorama has the 2016 13" TB with 2.9GHz i5 and 256GB SSD on closeout for $1299. If I had my choice, however, I'd opt for the 2017 13" nTB with 2.3GHz i5 and 8GB RAM.

I've noticed the difference in Geekbench scores for both models; obviously the 2017 is the better performance choice. My concern is whether the additional performance is worth another $150 or so, and which would have better resale, as I don't tend to keep machines that long.

Anyone have any thoughts? My usage case for the 13" is relatively light; I might ask it to cope with some light Adobe CC use from time to time, but everything else is undemanding. I can take or leave the Touch Bar.

For 150$ more go for the 2017. Not only the performance and the keyboard are better but you also get 1 more year of software support.

I'd opt for the newer model, just lessen the risk of dealing with keyboard issues. More so, I'd personally wait for the 2018 (which is what I'm doing), in the hopes that Apple will fully fix the keyboards.

Regarding keyboard upgrades for the 2018 model, I'm not saying this is unlikely BUT if a keyboard fix does happen, I seriously doubt apple is updating the mbp form factor after only 2 years, so whatever fix they make for the 2018 can be applied to the 2016 and 2017. So if you get a 2016 and it breaks after the 2018 is released I bet you they will give you the 2018 keyboard if it is somehow different. Just something to consider.

Got a refurb 2016 recently from Apple and it has the 2017 keyboard.

The CPU changes are not that notable going from Skylake to Kabylake, so with the 2017 keyboard you are saving a good few hundred bucks with a refurb.
