My daughter is heading into her freshman year of HS and we are looking at a few laptops for her.

1. Apple Refurb site 2016 m3 256 GB for $1019 US
2. New Purchased from Apple 2017 m3 256GB for $1200 US (company discount Apple Store)
3. Refurb/Open box 2015 Air base model and 256GB for about $950.00

She is not a gamer so this is school work and Netflix for the most part. Some amature photo editing for the yearbook etc possible.

What do you think? Is the 2017 worth $180 more?

I'm leaning towards the MacBook m3 256GB 2017 for what you are going to use it for. But if you can work with the older hardware that is found on the MacBook m3 256GB 2016 then it should work for you.

I would look at Best Buy for their deals and Open Box deals.
I had the same question in mind... Decided to go with the 2017 m5 512GB, hoping that i won't have to replace it until college.

Thank you all for your input. We went shopping last night and she right away decided the 12 inch was too small and she wanted a MBP 13 nTB. There was a $100 off Student coupon deal at BB and I wanted the 2017, not 2016 if possible. Got an additional discount so it was $1375 for the 256MB I5 2.3Mhz. More than I wanted to spend but even a 2016 refurb was only $75 less. There goes her birthday money ;)
