I reset both when the mac wasn't turning on automatically when I opened the lid, however now boot times are a lot slower. Before a restart would take ~25 seconds, now its ~45. Any ideas? I'm on High Sierra by the way.

Try this:
1. Open Startup Disk pref pane
2. Click lock, enter password
3. Click on internal drive and close pref pane
4. Reboot

Any difference?

Thanks for the tip but I managed to solve it. I reset the SMC this time holding the keys for about 20 seconds. Maybe my previous attempts to reset the SMC were not successful even though I held the keys down for 10 seconds which is what apple instructs.
