as a person who lives in chicago i'm a bit torn, but not too much.

it would be good for chicago for two reasons: CTA (public transport) improvement and it might help develop some of the communities that need it the most.

but i'm against it for more reason and frankly the US doesn't need to host another Olympic game so soon, so i think Rio is the most deserving.

Agreed. But it also gives Daley an excuse to raise our taxes again. Not that he needs to for the Olympics, but those cronies are expensive.

we'll have the highest taxes in the country i believe come november.
but not only that, it'll suck the city dry, and cause a huge disruption to everyone who lives here, which is why i'm against it.

i can understand that if you don't live in the city it doesn't seem like a big deal, but we have a lot of traffic congestion as it is, imagine it with the Olympics? how would anyone get anywhere.

In roughly four years time Londoners won't have to imagine. Of course I should be full time in Barcelona by then, so won't really care :)

Other than Australia, the games have never been held in the Southern Hemisphere, so maybe Rio should win. Second would be Tokyo (the Tokyo games were in 1960). Then Chicago and lastly Madrid.

I do understand your pain, I live in the burbs and I know traffic there is insane, and it can only be worse all over the place. But I do think that Metra and CTA need a nice kick in the pants, and with all the recent budget issues, this would probably bring public transportation in the area back to the top.

And of course, selfish me would hope to be able to afford tickets to see some of the events :D

I'd have to go with Tokyo.

I would love to go visit Japan, always dreamed of it since I was a kid. But after seeing how congested the public transport system, how expensive it is, how weak the dollar is, and how much schedule sux, I know I won't be able to go :(

Tokyo getting it only eight years after the Beijing games simply won't happen. I'd say it's between Chicago and Rio. Come on, huge CTA budgets!

I think Rio needs the improvements that hosting the Olympics could bring, more than anyone.

Chicago and Rio may have a little issue with crime, though.

I pray it's not Chicago. Not only is it due to the fact that congestion will become unbearable, but also because it would mark Chicago a prime terrorist target.

No way, besides, we don't deserve it. It should go to a more deserving area, like Rio, because all it'll do for us is raise CTA's budget and make our lives just a bit more bearable, therefore, no thanks, go to some other country.

the congestion would be horrible. i don't know how big of a target it'd become though. i certainly don't think that the US deserves it again so soon though, as i've already said. and again, its really not the best thing for our city right now. the only positive is that the CTA might have a chance of being better than it is. slightly.

Or it might just speed up gentrification...

that too. i have been and still am totally against it.

I love my city but I would hate it to be in Chicago for the following reasons:

1. Gas prices will be influenced.
2. Traffic up the ying/yang.
3. I agree with faust with the point of Chicago becoming a prime target for terrorism.

Chicago...America the Beautiful!

Please, no! As much as I love this city, having the Olympics here will divert resources away from far more pressing problems. Also, we need Daley to move on to retirement -- not accept another coronation for himself and his cronies.
