I am having intermittent screen response issues with the new 12.9"

Whenever I am using an application, stock or 3rd party, the screen will stop responding to my touches. I can't even close out with the home button. This happens mostly when I have the Smart Keyboard attached but it has happened a couple times without it. It happens when I have it on my lap and sometimes when I have it on a desk.

My work around is to detach/reattach the Smart Keyboard a few times. Sometimes I just have to take it off the magnet stay and reset it back. Other times I completely remove the keyboard and others I have to hard reset. It happens consistently with Mail, Messages, Safari, Reddit, Discord, CryptoTrader, YouTube.

Has anyone experienced this before? I feel like it is the Smart Keyboard. I know the old Smart Keyboard works with the new one. Is there a v2 out there that is possible more compatible? I am using the original 12.9 keyboard.

No. Haven't experienced anything like this and I use the Smart Keyboard as well.

My ipad pro 9.7" constantly froze until it was suggested that I install 1Blocker. Has worked fine since.

Did you setup the iPad as new or did you do a restore from a previous iPad? It's best to always setup as new. If you restore from a different iPad all sorts of strange things can happen. I have no idea if this has anything to do with your issues, but wanted to mention it.

Don't mean to revive an old thread, but did the OP find a permanent solution to this issue? I came from a 2016 12.9" iPad Pro to the 2017 12.9" iPad Pro. The old one was absolutely perfect, never gave a moment's trouble.

The first 2017 I got had to be exchanged because it had a visible colour shift down the left side of the screen (when held in portrait), but it worked fine. The second one I now have has a better screen, but every so often the iPad just goes completely unresponsive for many seconds at a time. Even the home button doesn't work, the touchscreen is unresponsive, it's like it's just hung. Then it continues, as normal, maybe 10-15 seconds later.

There's another issue with the touchscreen, which I cannot prove, but I do tend to play a few quick reaction games on the iPad and I am absolutely certain that a number of my "touches" on the screen on this new iPad are being missed. Never had any of these problems on the old iPad, so is it just the 2017's doing this? I read a thread somewhere about a 10.5" iPad Pro user with the same symptoms as me as well, so it's certainly not limited to the larger iPad Pro.

A late response from my side, but I have some unresponsive times too. I tap and nothing happens, then I tap somewhere in a different area and it works. It is really annoying.

Turned off gestures last night and for the 5 hours I was using the iPad I didn’t have any issues. Coincidence? I’ll report back if the problem occurs again.

All had been fine since Thursday until the slight freezing occured last night about 4-5 times in the space of an hour or less. Noticed after that there was a iOS update (11.2) so updated, will keep you psoted to see if there is any re-occurance going forward from there....

I was able to replicate the problem on 11.2. Cannot reproduce on my girlfriend 10.5. Therefore I sent my iPad for service as I believe this could be a hardware problem.

Did you try a full reset and then didn’t restore from a backup but freshly downloaded apps etc?

I tempted to try a recovery via iTunes as I think that will also reflash the firmware?

Yes, I set up the iPad as new, on a freshly restored iOS 11.2 (with iTunes, from recovery mode) and the problem/bug was still there even before downloading any app: i could simply reproduce it while browsing the web on Safari, or typing something in the Notes app, etc.

Now, a maybe-strange question: does it happen when the iPad is flat on a surface like a table?
Maybe it's a silly coincidence, but it always happens while I'm holding it with my hands, which makes me suspect even more that it might be something hardware-related.

Edit: before anyone asks: of course my fingers are on the bezels, I'm not touching the screen without noticing. ;-)

Ok thanks for that.

I can’t replicate the issue at will, it just ‘happens’....
Not sure about angle, I don’t use it on the flat normally so can’t recall if it happened when I had it flat.
All I can say is I’ve had the iPad since mid September and it started to show these funny freezes around 3-4 weeks ago, was fine before then.

I am having these same problems on my new iPad. I’ve only had this one a month. I traded in myipad2 because it started doing the same thing. I thought it was just time for a new one. On my old device I noted that this problem started after an update.i’ve contacted Apple Support and nothing they suggest has been a permanent solution. Installed everything as new and it helped for a while, but now it’s doing it again.wondering if it could be a bug in the updates.really disgusted as I have to shut it down and restart to get it moving again.

Came searching as I have the same problem...

For context I don’t use the Smart Keyboard, so that can’t be the determining factor. It happens to me when the device is in a range of different orientations, though perhaps slightly more often when using the Smart Cover at 15-ish degrees.

My device is a launch gen2 12.9 with 256GB, wi-fi only.

ETA: just had this happen to me again. Interestingly, I couldn’t scroll the safari browser window, but could still swipe the list of bookmarks...

I’m having the SAME exact problem - the keyboard will just not work sometimes [I have to take it off the smart-keyboard, take a [missing words or letters while im typing fast] - have to take the ipad OFF then with a glasses-cleaner-rag thing, cant think of the word atm, even though theres NO crumbs or anything there - wipe it “incase theres dust I can’t see”?! Or something - that’ll sometimes do it - sometimes not. Sometimes I just need to disconnect and connect it.

My touch screen has legit stopped working for - MOST of the screen most of the time, RARELY I can get it to scroll by touching as close as I can to the edge of the screen/half on the black boarder - and since theres no way to hook up a mouse] it makes copying and pasting a nightmare - typing anything huge hassle, I’m a promoter/research journalist [It’d take to long I’ve worn all the hats lol in music/music websites and street teams, aswell as my own projects] I cant even tap the screen [multiple times, or using pressure to get to copy/paste etc] to get to the end of this reply from above I had to use the PAINFULLY slow arrow keys [WHY are they so slow? The rest of the keyboard isnt but you need to use the arrows FORGET ABOUT IT - its gonna take minutes]

ALSO; My Apple Pencil broke/won’t charge/connect [real good idea, instead of just having it connect LIKE ANYTHING ELSE BLUETOOTH - you need to put it in the lightning port] well guess what - within two days it was broken, becuase I had to PLUG IT INTO LIGHTNING CONNECTOR - its scratched the male end, and unlike a charging cord, you can’t just replace a Male Lightning wires little metal connections that charge it.

I was so impressed with the [heres your specs] iPad Pro 12.9 [2nd Gen] 2017 just UPDATED yesterday to the newest iOS11 [1.2.1 - just checked its the latest]

Bought ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES - smart keyboard case, apple pencil, 512GB SDHX Card, 5G LTE even though YOU GET NO NUMBER** and it doesn't work farther than parked in my drive way making it USELESS - Spotify will play one song I selected for the drive it downloaded as I was leaving the house then play it - and nothing [not frozen, just “you have no internet connection” - Tell that to the T-Mobile bars I’m seeing *facepalm* [ie its still using my houses WiFi as I have a ridiculous Nighthawk router].

**Have fun, trying to calling or texting anyone without an APPLE PRODUCT. Even then sometimes they or I don’t recieve it and they have to hit up my LAN line. What happens incase of an emergency and I need to call 911 or any emergency services [and have nothing else - say, my LAN phone isnt charged [cuz we never use or remember to charge it as we have smart devices] I’m on the ground knee broken alone, crawling to my bed to wait until someone arrives home [I work from sometimes from home, as a personal care attended, for my autistic brother...] to bring me to the hospital [exactly what happened expect I had to crawl in bed all night 12pm-10am writhing in pain til someone showed up [so I could “leave” - for the ER]

Yes this happened before I bought the iPad but I’m just saying any situation - even if the 5G EVER worked - if I’m in the middle of no where and need the authorities or call the fire department, posion control, I could keep going but this is already long enough...

This wouldn’t bother me so much if I was told - but I was not; I even asked this directly and rephrased it 3 different ways, to the store manager - he said it would be no problem but the representive will definetly know. I asked her two-three times as well. I made it EXPLICIT I was buying this instead of an iPhone because my PC had broken, I am a musician so iOS has always been tempting [and my studio is useless until I can save up for the Workstation I want] I NEEDed someting I could text, call, as well as get online at home and out - still be atleast practicing music [the one thing I FANTASTIC will say is KILLER apps if your willing to pay!*** Unlike samsung’s light up game/on sound - can’t change the sounds “drum machines” [wild disrespect to all drum machines/samplers lmao] that never end...]

I was so impressed by the apple pencil - I bought it even though I can’t really even draw that well, and don’t do graphics. Its just immaculate for using your ipad like a real notepad [which is so much faster than typing sometimes]

**sucks that my touchscreen which used to be so articulate I could use both my hands on a touch screen synthesizer with FINESSE - each time recognizing EVERY finger separately [exactly what I want/need in a smart app to add to my tool in my studio and practice/live riggs.

I believe this is still under the warranty BUT I do not want to have to transfer all my stuff AGAIN. Its not easier to use ANY cloud - transfering to PC then to here esp since you REQUIRED to use iTunes [SMH] makes it equally troublesome and frankly time I do not have [infact Im almost certain as I will not stand for the broken apple pencil which broken in one day after two uses SMH due to the awful Lightning connection] YOU GUYS OWN THE RIGHTS TO THUNDERBOLT 3 - USE IT!

Never had this problem with Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt 2 or 3 aka USB C aka all the DisplayPort editions... -

Why the hell... you use the most fragile and antiquated one - that breaks by just using it correctly not roughly - especially on the apple pencil!!

Who wants to plug in their WIRELESS BLUETOOTH “pencil” [see the problem?] - if it was just for charging and you could plug it into a charger thats fine but to actually connect to the device so you can use it thats INSANE - its like you were intentionally making the connection shoddy*, also why even USE bluetooth if you need to freaking plug it in first the point is so you DONT have to do that!

***Possibly to force people to buy the iPhone X just so they could do these SIMPLE BASIC things?! OR they want you to just shut up buck up and buy another one - cause we ALLLL have that desposible income! [OR im sure hopefully to you] they’ll not get around to it before the warranty is up] This is supposed to be the top tier for iPads man... so dissapointed. I sometimes have to click the screen 89 times just to get it to move the cursor...to the wrong place! or just stop when I’m trying to highlight something.

I don’t wanna have to by DRUG DEALER BURNER phone just because my extremely expensive sophisticated piece of technology, that I paid thousands of dollars for, that by all means should be able to call and text people, can’t! [I don’t care if I had to use the email - or some other weird new system] but ONLY IF the other person has APPLE. Lan Lines - others ie Androids, can’t do it - whilst its SMALLER “smart device” brother [don’t even try and tell me @ this PRICE and level of TECH - you couldn’t assign us a telephone number - or atleast make it so the iMessages and “Facetime-AUDIO” to be able DO THIS [even without a number - I dont care I just want it to function like it LOGICALLY SHOULD and I WAS TOLD it would. [ugh can’t I please just make a call easily... for christ sakes - I dont even like SKYPE - I don’t want or need Facetime video]

Please tell me theres a solution [and that it doesn’t involve spending TONS of more money] any help would be MORE THAN APPRECAIATED! Thank you...

PS I’m just gobbsmacked... I made sure to grill the manager and representative or whatever - to make sure this was right for me and could do everything - even trying both the smartkeyboard and the logitech one - now I’m thinking I should’ve gone with that since this one keeps disconnecting [not physically tho, just every now again in the middle of what Im doing - typing usually - the touchscreen keyboard will just POP up while the smartkeyboard doesn’t work: NOTHING to the contrary from both Apple Store employees on what it could do [and needed it to] told to me. ie No Phone Number - and all the rest.

The only thing I can even SUSPECT for the touch screen is that I have a 9H Screen Protector on it [but it worked flawlessly till a few days ago no problem, I never touched the thing til I had it on, and my Nintendo Switch one works perfectly/fine with NO issues whatsoever.

PS Dre Beats are a scam, and the free ear buds I got with my iPad Pro are absolutely terrible [I’m a home studio owner with two sets of AMAZING head phones - open and closed - these are just a SIMGIN better than the OG ipod earbuds - as an audiophile and engineer - I can’t even listen to casual music with them, because I just can tell all the flaws - how colored it is, etc etc] plus it charge doesnt last - easy to lose the charger thats TINY and uses freaking lightning OF COURSE - it is nice to not have them plugged in though I guess... :shrugh:
[doublepost=1514094526][/doublepost]One last thing is it just me or does every update fix a few things, and simulaneously break others [or more]?!

Anyone got anywhere with this? I still experience the problem regularly, though I must admit I haven’t done a backup-reset-restore yet.

My 512 GB WiFi+cellular gen 2 12.9” Pro still has intermittent touch screen issues as well. I feel my problems are worse when the iPad is in my lap at a certain angle. I cannot replicate the issue at will but I can demonstrate that it happens more when the iPad is used a certain way. I’m not sure if wiping it clean and Re-downloading all my apps from new rather than restoring a backup would resolve this issue tbh.

Indeed. It’s a trivial thing in the grand scheme but I have a whole stack of games on my iPad and most lack iCloud saves of their own so I would lose a lot of progress. Might just have to take the hit with a completely fresh build.

I’m considering taking mine in to be replaced if I can convince them that I have an issue. Have you noticed if your screen gives trouble more often when you’re holding the device at any angle, particularly when lying with it in bed? Mine rarely gives trouble when it’s flat on a table but often gives trouble when at any angle in my hands (making sure my hands aren’t touching beyond the bezel, of course!)
