Hi, I have a 2017 15" MacBook Pro 3.1GHZ / 16GB RAM / 2TB PCIE drive with the better graphics card in it.

Before tonight, this has been a flawless machine. I just had a rather concerning episode of colored lines showing up on the screen as I processed raw files. Now, as a disclaimer, these were Nikon D850 NEF files and Adobe has only just released an update for CC Photoshop only, not CC Lightroom. And to be fair, this camera is so new that Apple has not yet released an update for it either. The files are big, 45MP.

I was using both Photo Mechanic and CC camera raw and the thing got hot. After about 30 minutes the lines appeared. I did a restart right away and the left 20% of the screen was light green lines.

The last time I saw lines like this, a vid card went bad on my MacPro.

Anyone else have issues with this machine's display going buggy under load like that?
 
Interesting - and worrying - development of this model. When you say you were running PM and ACR, what exactly were you doing? Batch processing / importing, etc? This would help give us an idea of what kind of stress your system was under.

Have you run iStat Mini or SMC Fan Control to monitor temps and boost fan speeds?

Caveat: I always run SMC and tune the fans higher on all my Macs. I don't need silence, I value power, speed and hardware longevity more than anything.

It just happened again with web browsing. I can't help but think my vid card is on the way out.

So I had about 600 D850 NEF files in PM, had gone through the process of selecting my edit for processing. I had SMC running on high because temps were hitting about 165F. But...only the left fan was hitting 6K, the right one stays at 2,100 rpm.

Then I started dragging and dropping sets of 5-15 NEF's into Adobe ACR for export to JPEG. I got about two sets of 10 or so images into a 150 image take and started seeing lines appear. When I switched apps back and forth, they would get more lively.

I am backing up right now, browsing with the screen set to about 60% brightness and all seems fine, temp is 104F.

Very troubling. I can do all my photo work on my MacPro but billing, etc is on this one.

Sounds like a video RAM issue to me. I'd suggest you to document it (take pictures/videos of it occurring) and bring it to a repair center for fixing.

Its neither interesting nor worrying, if its an isolated case. Graphic cards have failed before and will fail in the future. It will only become worrying if this starts occurring systematically.

Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar (record a video or three (edit them down to just the juicy bits) to show them if you can't replicate the error in-store) and explain all to them.

It's a 2017 model so you're still under AppleCare (think about upgrading to the 3 year if you haven't already) and they do take good care of you if there's a serious issue. I have nothing but good things to say about AppleCare and their 'geniuses' from being a walk-in consumer to now being an Apple Business customer, they've always been above and beyond any other manufacturer when it comes to taking care of my needs - and that's here in Hong Kong, where customer service lasts exactly for a perfunctory 7 days and no more...

Sure, you may be without your new MBP for between 3-7 days but they will get to the bottom of the issue.

a) I've suffered under the 2011 MBP GPU issue and have had issues with logic boards on the 2014/2015 model and b) own a 2017 MBP that gets thrashed for a minimum of 10 hours a day. Ergo, I find it interesting and potentially worrying, but you're right, if it's an isolated case it's not an issue.

Ahh...if only it were that easy. I live 220 miles away from the nearest Apple store and have a business trip next week in that I can not be without my laptop. It might actually be easier to buy a new one and return this one.

Oh damn. I forget what it's like not to live in a city sometimes. If you can't make it to an Apple Store but can return it for a full refund, I would do that to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't wait on this. I'd return it as soon as possible.
That means... TODAY.

Once your "return window" closes, your only option will be... repair.

Returning it sounds like a good idea. I hope they can get you a system with your BTO config quickly.

That ship has sailed and I have 20K in invoices to get out. I am not getting anywhere with this until later this week at the earliest.

Remember, Apple does temps in Centigrade, not Fahrenheit. And max operating temps are close to 100C. 80+C (177+F) GPU temps are pretty common. And Apple does not throttle back their CPUs until the approach 100C (212F).

Yep, the temp I gave was in F, so within specs. I just did a presentation all day with a projector hooked up to the HDMI adapter and it did fine, no lines, no heat.

I have more processing to do tonight so I will keep a close eye on it....
