I have a problem with my 2017 13’’ MacBook pro’s battery. Its 886 days old with 22 cycles.
2 weeks ago it started to shut down when its unplugged around 50%.
I did SMC reset, PRAM and both of those didn’t work. Last week it turned off at 70%.
So I did a clean install of Sierra, which also took almost 6 hours, hoping the battery goes back to working smoothly but when I check the battery health at Coconut application it shows the battery once 79% once 80%.
It constantly changes and unfortunately I still have sudden shutdown problem. According to my research Apple says until 1000 charges if the battery health isn’t less than 80% it should be replaced free of charge. It states that this is related for machines that are 1 year old but obviously I have a defected MacBook Pro battery.
I also did the diagnostics check and it came up with the PPT002 preference code which states the battery is functioning normally but need to be replaced soon. Yesterday I went to an Apple Store without an appointment to see if they would help me out. The d.. genius bar representative just checked my serial number and see that its out of warranty and told me that I need to pay 250 dollar. Also told me that as the battery full capacity is low this kind of problem can occur but I couldnt make that f... guy understand that my battery full capacity fluctuates which is really weird. Does anyone has any suggestion besides buying a battery and replace it by myself?

The battery capacity estimate is not accurate; the actual capacity is probably much lower. Fluctuations are possible especially if it's dying like in your case. I have a old 2012 MBP lying around with a similar battery issue.

The usual procedure to calibrate the battery meter might not work reliably in your case if the battery is indeed degraded but it may be worth trying.

Did you use your MBP mostly plugged in for the 886 days? 22 cycles suggests very little use. This is perhaps not helpful but leaving the battery always plugged in at 100% causes it to degrade more quickly than if it was used normally (ideally frequent, shallow discharges).

Most of the time I used it plugged and tried to use it with unplugged once a month. At that time it was the suggested use for optimal battery usage.
I may have missed couple of months but i wouldnt expected the battery die only after 2 years of purchase date. I should have used it more unplugged but because of 30 40 missing cycles shouldn't have cause the battery to die this quick.
I am just give it a try with Catalina upgrade, which probably won't work, and than probably order a Macbook battery from amazon and I will try to replace it myself. There is now way I will pay 250 dollar for a two year old Macbook.

Do not know if it works with todays battries. But if you cycled the battery several times from full to depleted you could regain some capacity. But be careful, lithium batteries do not like to be competely discharged.

I can not deplete the battery to 0% because as soon as it gets to 80% it shuts down. It would probably regain some capacity if i could have use it until the battery gets to even 5%.
I don't know how to do this at this state of the battery.

Sorry, I can't think of anything either. Looks like the battery's done :(

For new batteries going forward I recommend much more frequent usage, even as much as 1/5 of a cycle (100% - 80%) per day. At that rate it will take over a decade to reach 1000 cycles. I do this for my systems and it dramatically prolongs battery life. One of many examples is my mid 2009 MBP which I still use with almost 90% battery health.

Also never deep discharge if possible, and try to minimise heat. I know this is not immediately useful, but hope it helps in future.

Yeah, probably I will have to replace the battery. I upgraded to Catalina. I was able to use it until it gets to 38% but i used it for only 3 4 hours before the sudden shutdown. I wouldn't replace the battery even if with a 3 4 hour battery life but I am afraid that one day sudden shut down will cause some other problem. I will look for a youtube video how to replace the battery by myself. Thanks for trying to help out.

Hi,

I just opened a similar thread. Crazy how you managed to only have 22 cycles in 2 years. My battery went from "Normal" to "Service Battery" all of a sudden. Yours says "normal" with a worse full charge capacity.
