I know ol' Tim Apple has to not-so-subtly encourage people to upgrade to new Macs, but the upcoming version of Mac OS is cutting off support for a lot of really good and still-capable devices.

It doesn't mean they stop working. They will still get security updates for some time even after they stop getting OS updates.

I used my last Mac for a decade, and well past its "vintage" status. It continued working just fine.

Touch Bar = One of Apple's worst "innovations".
I feel it was a genuine attempt at innovation. The pressure was on for Apple to add a touch screen to their main laptops, and they clearly didn’t want to do that. Instead we got the touchbar, but it wasn’t because of laziness. Adding that touchscreen would have been so easy; it was the lazy, “default” option. The touchbar was, to me, some attempt at innovation, even though it failed. I don’t think Apple ought to be mocked for trying something; there’s plenty more to criticize that’s more deserved.

Welcome to the world of progress. Do you expect Apple to manufacture and stock parts forever? They aren't blowing up people's laptops. Just saying that they won't support them if they fail.

It's a compromise... They are asked for a touchscreen Mac but they already have the iPad for that so they replaced the Function keys with the Touch Bar...

Wasn't across the whole lineup, not even the whole laptop lineup, people complained over no physical Escape key, devs barely supported it.
Ooh, didn't see the missing Esc key. That would have been a killer for me.

The 2017 15" MacBook Pro is my previous laptop and I still have it. It's vintage now ...

Battery is almost dead and it has some keyboard issues.
I was considering at some point replacing the battery with top keyboard just to revive it.
Apple was asking me 625 EUR + VAT for this repair ...
It looks like I may not be able to do it anymore.
I did the keyboard replacement on mine in 2020 which gave me the new battery, etc. Still use it today as a bootcamp laptop.

RIP
It might not have been the best laptop, it might have overheated frequently, but it served me well.

I still keep it around solely for windows virtualization.

Wild how time flies. The 2015 remains the best MBP ever made. Have a 13 and a 15” and they’re indestructible.
I’ll have to disagree with you there. I think that the M1 Pro/Max MBPs firmly dethroned the 2015s upon their releases. Granted, I feel like the 2021 is an iteration of the 2015 models rather than its immediate predecessors.

My 2017’s battery started swelling after about three years, but they covered it out-of-warranty under the keyboard repair program since it involves replacing the same component (the top casing). At this point however, I only keep it around for x86 stuff.

The 2017 model was the first Touch Bar MacBook Pro I ever owned before giving it to my fiancé when I upgraded to the 16" M1 Max MBP. I remember being curious about the Touch Bar beforehand but grew to hate it once I owned one. Much happier now without it.

'really good' is a term that doesn't belong in the same sentence as the 2016-2019 MacBook Pros (16" excepted).
Except for that the fact that I guess my 2019 16" Pro will be obsolete next year....

Vintage?
My Late 2011 Pro 13” is still usable
with removable SSD, removable RAM (515GB and 16GB on board) with Catalina, Handoff, AirDrop working up to 3h on original battery after little cracking 😂

Currently is my 3D printer support as CPU cries on Bambu Studio slicer

I had the mbp with touchbar for 3 years. I never ever touched the touchbar even once 😜

I always loved the Touch Bar on my work MacBook Pro -- I don't understand the hate.
I miss my touchbar every time I use my Mac.

Having dynamic configurable buttons I could set up for each app was so damned useful. Ditto for slider volume/brightness controls.

I don’t think anybody who had one hated the touchbar. They hated the missing function/Esc keys.

If they’d found room for all the keys plus the touchbar, we’d see it on every MBP now and people would universally love it.
