Hello,

I recently picked up a 2017 MacBook Pro as I did not see the need to upgrade to the 2018 version. My question is, I have the lowest specced 2017 MacBook Pro and I was wondering if it would be fine to run on a 34" 1440p UltraWide monitor? I've heard things about the GPU not being able to push out the pixels but I thought i'd ask first.

This is the monitor I am looking at purchasing - https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UC99-W-ultrawide-monitor

Thanks.

You will have better exposure if you ask this question in the MacBook pro forum. This is the Mac Pro forum.

Which MBP is it? 13" with the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640? Or 15" with the Radeon Pro whatever it was?

The max supported res of the 640 is 4096 x 2304 @ 60Hz via DP, and that display is 3440 x 1440, so it sounds like it will work. I have no idea what the performance would be like.

The 15" with the Radeon Pro will be better, obviously. I presume both MBPs would be able to detect the native resolution and offer it when the screen is connected, but I have never tried it myself.

My MacBook Air late 2013 powers a LG 34” ultra wide in clamshell mode with 2 desktops permanently open with multiple windows in the mains one always open and calendar and mail open in the first one. If that’s of any indication.

It's the 13" with the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 550.

I recently picked up the Samsung Thunderbolt 3 Ultrawide and my late 2016 MBP with Radeon 455 and Intel 530 handles the 1440p resolution just fine, currently driving the monitor via the Thunderbolt 3 connection at 100Hz. I believe your MBP should also be able to drive this resolution.
