hi all, surely there are lots of us out there with various keyboard issues, but haven't seen mine yet:

bought a brand new 15 inch touchbar macbook pro 4 days ago- all worked well until the zero key backlight became yellow today, tried to clean the key etc-doesnt help. all other keys are fine.

was wondering if anyone has ever experienced something like this and what apple has done in the case-i know i can return the laptop as per the statute however since it was a custom order including non-english keyboard i have no intention of waiting for up to three weeks for a replacement.

thanks

Presumably, unless for some very strange reason that the key cap itself is yellowing, or some foreign particle under the keyboard is distorting the light, if the backlighting of the keyboard is starting to fail, you are going to need a new top case (or just a swapped unit.)

Have you taken a picture of it, sent it to Apple support, explained the unusual circumstance you are in, and asked them how you could proceed from here so that you do not suffer extended downtime without your computer? Apple can check the availability of the keyboard part you would potentially need, and could possibly direct you to an Apple Store or AASP with the part in stock. Alternatively, you can call an AASP, explain the issue to them, and have them check GSX to get an idea of how long it would take to get a replacement topcase in.

thanks for the reply! I've explained the case to apple and was told that their technician will need to take a look which means me bringing it to their store.

i've been trying to, but the phone camera is unable to catch it. in person it looks really off when you compare it to the nearby keys

I thought I was crazy, but a bunch of keys on my same model have turned yellowy as well. I had a MacBook Pro Early '11 for almost 7 years and never had any back light discoloration...

Honestly, I'd simply take it in to an Apple Store - make a Genius Bar appointment online and then when you go just ask them what the deal is and what you need to do.

Cheers

Weirdest thing I have ever heard. Do LEDs change color like that before they are about to go out? I’ve never seen anything like that. They’ve either worked or they haven’t.

Replace it! Now! Wait the 2-3 weeks. Hell, wait 2 to 3 months if you have to. This is how the larger problems rear their heads. You are well within your return window and have no excuses. If you don't, I will look forward to seeing your post on here on how the space bar and enter key no longer work.

When I brought my new MacBook Pro 2017 a dead pixel showed up after about 30 days. Since the computer was so new, I effectively negotiated them to send me a completely new unit before i even returned the other one. They did this as I explained to them, that I could not have any days without my computer, explaining that this is what I expected with such a price, which they agreed upon. So this could also be a possible solution for you, just calmly negotiate your case.

Backlight discolouration can be caused by prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke. Could be a possibility.
