So my computer will be off (not sleeping) and when I open the lid it will turn on and boot up. Is that new (I just got this coming from a 2013 MBP). Thanks.

Yes, it's been introduced with the 2016 line-up. And to answer your next question: no, to my knowledge it cannot be disabled.

It can be disabled but I don't remember off the top of my head how. There is a setting in preferences that will disable it.

There's no option in System Preferences, though it can be disabled in Terminal with
Code:
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00
and turned back on with
Code:
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

Just out of interest, what is the use case for wanting to open the screen of an inert computer and have it stay inert...?

When I'm done with my computer for the day I close the lid to protect it. The next day I open the lid and the first thing I want to do is wipe down the keyboard and topcase with a damp paper towel. It's easier to do this without it booting up on you, half the time I hit the shift key and it boots up into safe mode.

I could wipe it down before I close the lid at the end of the day but I'm usually more inspired to do it the next day.

You wipe down your keyboard every day? Dude, talk about excessive cleaning habits...

@simonsi, to answer your question: can’t think of one. That’s why it never really bothered me.

Acer laptops had this "feature" a few years before Apple. Be honest, who here doesn't like this "feature" on PC laptops? But now that Apple is doing the same, are you giving them a free pass simply because it's Apple?

When I pack it in my bag I want it to be off. Sometimes I can’t remember if I turned it off or left it on sleep. Lifting the lid will ensure it powers up, whether it was sleeping or off. (There was a time when the sleep indicator solved this problem :).)

I’m not going to change NVRAM args over it, but it can be mildly annoying sometimes to wait for it to power up just to turn it off again.

I wouldn’t mind this feature on a PC laptop. It’s everything else that would bother me.

It took me a few days to get use to this feature but I actually like it. I actually shut down my computer each time I use it and it usually turns on within 5 seconds. And it launches all of my windows after logging in.

For my use case, it makes sense it turns on. I mean why else would I open my laptop screen if not to use it.

Just a curiosity: why do you want it to be off when you pack your back? What's the benefit of having it powered off over having it in a low-power standby mode?
The laptop not accidentally waking up in the bag and trying to overheat itself. Wouldn’t be the first time a laptop came out of sleep while in a bag for me.

Got it, makes perfect sense, thanks. Never had that problem though, so that's why I probably never cared enough to think about that.

Happened to me a few times with my BT peripherals waking it up. For example, my Intuos Pro would turn on (accidental button press in the bag) and wake the Mac. However, since I turned off the option for BT devices to wake my MacBook, I had no similar issues.

Not directly related to the topic of this post, but I thought it might be useful to you.

Thanks for the tip! It certainly could’ve been my mouse that woke it up then.

I've noticed this too and just assumed I was hitting the power button every time.. somehow.. until I read this.

Though sometimes I like to clean my Mac, screen flat on the table, cleaning each key meticulously and you know, it helps to have the electronics all fully shut off for any sort of damp cloth application! :p
