2017 MBP unlock with Apple Watch

When my MBP has been idle for a while and I first wake it it will not even attempt to unlock with my Apple Watch. To get it to unlock with my Apple Watch I have to close the lid again and re-open. This second time it will at least try to unlock using my Apple Watch.

I've tried turning the feature off and on again but this hasn't helped.

I am running the latest version of MacOS.

Has anyone got any idea how to get the Mac to try first time to unlock with Apple Watch?
