Hey Everyone,

I just bought the 2017 mbp touch 3.5 16gb 512gb space gray. I have had several pros throughout the years all in silver. When I opened up my new Mac and got it going my first thought was... is it dark in here? I have adjusted both the keyboard brightness and the screen brightness to max levels and I can't help but feel like they scaled both of these features back. I compared the backlit keyboard of older models and it seems that apple prevented light from coming through the sides of the keys the way it used to? Obviously I can clearly see all the keys but something just feels dark. Anyone else notice this?

The amount of nits the MBP display has was increased in one of the recent updates I believe, which essentially means it can get brighter. Now since you say that you put the brightness to a maximum, this means that the brightness contrast between display and chassis (and everything else in the room) will be higher, especially in dark environments. This might be the "darker" chassis/keyboard area that you're perceiving: it's possibly not the keyboard area that's darker but the display that's brighter.

Of course other factors might play into it. Space gray has a darker color tone than silver so that might have an effect too, and like you said the fact that each key now has an individual diode with no light coming from inbetween the keys might strenghten this perception.

Yep as above the screen now goes to 500 nits instead of 300nits its a lot brighter. The keyboard now has an individual LED behind each key making the edges much less lit up compared to the backlit keyboards of old.
