So yesterday morining, I got up and my iPP was dead. I did not think much about it. So last evening, when I went upstairs. I turned off my ipad ( I did not shut it down completely), put the pencil in the charging position and closed my case (UAG). So I get up this morning and it is completely dead again.

So I look at the battery app - It says it turned on at 8pm was on until about 1:15, when it completely died. If I double tap from sleep - it turns off after a few seconds if I don’t swipe up. I just test that. For activity by App - it says Chrome used 98%, but only 2hr 45 minutes. That does not account for the 5.25 hours it was awake in the night. There was no update in the night....

What could be causing this?

Hm this is weird. What is the battery percentage when you leave it at night? Also what is the battery percentage of the pencil when you put it in the charging position?

I have noticed that Screen Time is not very accurate. Sometimes it shows statistics that are just not correct at all so to be honest I do not rely on them that much.

So you don't think that Chrome could be a reason for this? It sounds weird to appear as 98 % usage you know. Can it be some site open in Chrome?

I saw another post where the bluetooth keyboard was turning it on. I will have to check that out. I am wondering if the cat was laying on my keyboard... LOL

The pencil was pretty full, over 90%. Thankfully I have a 30w charger - so I can get it charged a lot faster. For Chrome, the hours are not matching.

I just found the off button on the keyboard. I will try that later...

Hm, yeah, a good point. It might have impact on this.

So it's not about the pencil being charged. Cool about the 30 W charger. How much it takes you to charge it?

I just found the off button on the keyboard. I will try that later...

Fingers crossed that this helps the situation!

I am not sure when I started charging, but it was sometime after 10. So in 1.5 hours I am at 72% - with 100% screen brightness and it on.

So that did NOT fix the problem. Dead again this morning, it was at 100% when I turn it off and closed it last night. It could be that it is trying to do a backup and I don’t have enough iCloud space with this 1TB model... ugh

I guess you could disable backups to see but even if so it should not try to backup until it is dead. Might be time to visit the Apple store.

You just might be right. At 5:34 last night it was at 93% when I shut it down. I see that about 11pm it had a few minutes of activity before it turned off with 0 battery. It does say that 73% of usage was from “Home & Lock Screen”....

well I stopped the backup, it was going to take more than 1 day for 300 GB.

I agree with this. I don't have storage for backup in the iCloud Drive either, but I don't wake up to a dead iPad. It just informs me that I don't have enough time.

Btw another idea is not to completely disable the backup, but to change the settings. I have setup Backups to be done only when the iPad is locked, it's charging and it is connected to WIFI. As it's charging I don't have the iPad being dead issue.

it can't be the backup , it IS set do to this when plugged in. I woke up today and it is a 100%, not plugged in. So I guess I am Not going to the Apple store today. I do need to find out how to do a backup onto my chromebook though.

You are right. In that case it cannot be about the backup as it won't start backing up if it's not plugged in. Good that today is not dead, but why it's not dead is the next question.

I don't have enough storage on my iCloud so last night by pure accident I found out how to back it up on my computer (it's windows though). You most probably know this as you have used iPads way more than me, but still I decided to share. You need iTunes and you need to connect your iPad to the Chromebook (I assume via USB-C considering you have new one). Then you will find an option to back up on your computer.

That's how it worked for me but is there iTunes version for Chromebooks? I assume not.

This page offers few options but I think most of them require iTunes - https://www.imore.com/how-back-your-iphone-or-ipad.

I am finally getting a backup done - I was able to turn ‘off’ file explorer - where I uploaded 300gb of files. They are all backed up on several drives.

Maybe I can go back to the next tier down - instead of paying for 2TB of storage that hopefully I won’t need. I will see after the backup is done.

This is great! How much storage do you have now in the cloud?

Now I was able to drop down to the 200 GB at $2.99 mo. SO for the next month I have the 2TB still LOL. I am only using about 1/2 - 101gb

Oops - So I called Apple for another issue (when I plug in to the monitor, I have no sound, even with a bluetooth speaker. ) He thought maybe the problem with discharging is that I had the Screen Auto-Lock turned off. I did that when I was uploading my ipad with 300gb of files...

That’s the strangest thing I’ve heard today.

That's a good theory! Worth checking. Cool that you managed to make things work when it comes to the iCloud Drive.
