Hi all,

I picked up a new MBP last night (I was torn between the i7 and i5, figuring that the i5 might have better battery life, but I have no data on that so far, so decided to give the i7 a try.)

I run marketing for a startup, and I do photo editing, design in AI and Photoshop, as well as social media, blogging, budgeting, etc. Typically I have about 6-8 Firefox tabs open at a given time. (Usually Google Docs, Google Sheets, Asana, Gmail, Google Calendar, and a website or two.) I also usually have Slack, Mac Mail and Messages running. I use AI and Acrobat intermittently in a typical day, and I close it when not using it, as I find the Adobe programs to consume the most CPU/energy of anything I do. (I only run Activity Monitor briefly, when I'm checking on processes/consumption.)

I'm wondering about battery life... all of my iCloud/emails/etc were done syncing as of last night. I charged it fully overnight, and have my screen brightness at about 40%, and keyboard backlight off. I haven't used AI at all yet today, and edited one PDF for about 10 minutes in Acrobat. I'm not encouraged by what I'm seeing from the battery so far. Here's what I've got:

I'd love to get your thoughts on this. I feel like I'm not asking that much of it, power-wise, and expected to get at least 1-2 hours more than the less-than-6 I'm on track for now. Is there anything I'm not considering (like the fact it's brand new—will it improve after a few cycles?)

I appreciate any insights!

FWIW, I'm looking at this as an upgrade from a fairly maxed 2017 13" MBP (mostly because I'm a geek and can't help myself.) Two things I notice immediately are the display (love the True Tone) and the keyboard. Definitely quieter, and like the—IMO—more supple feel of it, as compared to my 2017. (I haven't had any problems with my 2017 keyboard.)

Even if your iCloud stuff is done syncing, there is still Spotlight indexing and things like that. I’m seeing an average of about 8 hours of battery with general usage with my system which is the same as yours. I’d give it another day or two.

Unless you’re really stressing the system I doubt i5 vs i7 will make a large power difference. My CPU is sitting mostly idle downclocked to 1.2-1.4 GHz when I’m just doing browsing and things like that. The i5 would sit at the exact same range.

Ah, good to know, thank you! I wondered if there might still be indexing going on, so that's very helpful. I'll watch and wait, and see what happens... I really like the machine, so I'm hopeful that battery life will get a little better as it settles in/gets all its indexing done!

Well, with the very next cycle... my expectations are far exceeded. I've continued to use it the whole work day, in the same ways described above. No heat, no fans, and this is the status of the battery so far.

What app is that?

You're lucky! My battery health on my brand new machine is between 99.5-100%. You have some extra capacity :)
