I have a 2018 15.4 macbook pro 2.2ghz 512 gb 16gb laptop with AppleCare+ until 2021. I haven't had any issues with the laptop but I am curious if anyone went from a 2018 to 2019 macbook pro and what their experience is so far.

I do use the macbook for work and surfing.

I can at least get $1200 plus applecare refund from apple but I wanted the forum's input.

Thanks!

I did. I'm a web developer and have app environments in VMs and all the browsers open most of the time. I went with the 16" with 32gb ram and more storage for extra space to run the VMs and keep them on drive rather than an external. I can type faster on the new keyboard as well. I've got my 2018 up on CL, hope I sell it soon to make this move less painful! :D

if you want you can do it...i came from 2018 to this one...keeping the 2018 as well...but, i think if late next year Apple will release the 10th Intel 10nm+lpddr4+wifi6 i think i will jump again...
So...its up to you...but you could wait for another year...since 2018 is still new and without issues

Two factors here - 'worth it' objectively is if the extra graphics power in particular and also keyboard if you're typing a lot will improve your working and give you back a dividend from increased productivity. The other is the fact you work hard for your money and if you want it, then you're entitled to get it (personally I never try to 'justify' a purchase, that it's something I want is usually justification enough). On the latter just maybe given the 2018s were expensive machines and likely have only seen around a year's service might be enough to decide to hold off a while though?

I’m actually thinking of doing the exact same thing. Although I myself am unsure what to do with the 2018 model. Curious, how did you get apple to refund the applecare?

I am also considering jumping from my 2018 - 2.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 16 GB to a 2019 probably baseline or one bump up, HOWEVER unlike OP I have had constant issues with the keyboard which Apple replaced about 3 months ago and further issues since the repair, particularly thermal issues under a low to moderate work load, as well as the more annoying issue which is that the screen will flash from a white temperature color to a very blue temperature color regularly and repeatedly back and forth after a couple of hours of coding or schoolwork or pretty much any activity.

My working theory on my new issues is because something occurred during the keyboard replacement. I believe this is true because my local Apple Store after almost 2 weeks of trying to replace the keyboard and failing, had to send it to the Depot and while it was there they replaced the entire logic board and that is where I believe things went wrong(er).

Soooo my question to anyone who has an opinion, is that like OP I am considering using just the Apple Trade In service which would yield me somewhere between 40-50% of my original cost from a year ago. I've sold plenty of iPhones and iPads but never a Mac through CL or Swappa or the like. Clearly Apple is going to lowball a trade in but any feelings on whether the potential selling price profit difference is worth the hassle? Including the hassle of trying to get this MacBook back to its original factory condition through another warranty claim?

Thanks in advance!

I did this as well. Coming from a 2019 15” i9, 32gb ram. Waiting for my order to come in from the Apple Store.

I hated the butterfly keyboard and dont really splurge on anything for myself outside of tech...so its an annual refresh for me :)

Did you trade in or sell?

I don't think that is a given. I have read a lot of commentators are mistaken and the 45w chips that have those features will be another year at least.

I am going to sell it online once the new system is delivered (12/2).
Considering exactly the same. I wonder...have never sold a MBP online. What do you think we can get for our model (i have the same...at 2TB and 2.4Ghz)

I went from a 15" 2019 MBP to a 16" 2019 MBP. The keyboard is a dream to type on compared to the butterfly. I've had every incarnation of the butterfly keyboard and eventually got used to it, but when I went back to the old design I realized how much more satisfying it is to type with more key travel. The additional screen real estate was just icing on the cake for me.

I traded in my 2018 2.6Ghz / 16GB / 512 for a base model 16". main reason was the keyboard. I had already had to bring the 2018 in to the apple store twice in the past year and since I am constantly typing, I wanted the better typing experience.

When I looked at trading in the 2018 through apple, I was quoted $1400. When I quoted keeping the charger, I got $1390. Worth the $10 for another charger.

your 2018 butterfly keyboard failed twice in the last year??

You know I haven’t even looked to be honest. With all the Black Friday sales going on i am sure i will lose some money but when i originally bought it the cost was $3500. So I assume <fingers crossed> i can get at least $2200 for it given it has the i9-8 procs, 32gb of RAM, and the upgraded video card.

You have me thinking of getting apple to quote me on mine. Might not be worth the hassle for a few hundred extra dollars to try and sell online...

I have put mine up for sale (Macbook Pro 2017 - base config), no one has contacted me except bots. Considering it costed me 2k euros instead of usual 2,8k, and Apple is offering to me 1050eur for 2 years old machine - which basically helped me to earn much much more than the price was (I'm using it for a living) I guess I will just go this way and trade it in.

I don't have time to drive around with laptop to sell.

Other option that crossed my mind is that I may just give it to my parents - their Macbook Pro 2011 - which is just for web browsing basically is going to die sooner or later...

I just made the order today. However to qualify I'm jumping because my 2018 is short on cores, RAM and SSD space and its causing me constant issues. If I weren't having these problems I would stay with the 2018 model!

I’m considering trading in my 15” 2017 MBP and getting the 16”. Can I bring in my 2017 to an Apple store and get a credit? I don’t want to box it all up if they then say I have to do it online and wait for a gift card.

I really want to trade late 2018 that I purchased in January but the trade-in deal isn’t good. I have the i9 with Vega 20 and 2Tb and only was on,y offered $1800 for what was over $4000 when I bought it. If I did get the new one I would max it out and get 4tb. I am tired of carrying external ssd. I use this for music and will be doing more video work
