Hi,

I bought a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 Inch when it was released a few years ago. I noticed today that it has a bend. I am confident I did not cause it as it has always been in a case and never dropped.

I remember hearing about these iPads Pros being bent new. According to Apple some bend is fine. Since I have Apple Care + I called Apple and the manager is going to look at me getting an express replacement. However, it needs to be approved first.

Apparently its $49 per accidental incident. In my mind, this was not an accident but rather a manufacturing flaw.

Curious to see what happened to other people who attempted to get their bent iPad Pros replaced outside the 14 day new window. See my attached image.

Did the case cause the iPad Pro to bend over a year and a half?

No. When I originally got it, I always had it in the folio case. Now it is in the magic keyboard case. Never dropped it. Always carried it to and from work in a bag.

I probably did not notice because the Apple Pencil blocks the view when it is mounted to it.

Apple indicated that iPads may be bent by up to 400 microns. That’s less than half of a millimeter, which is hard to discern with the naked eye. That bend is far more than 400 microns.

They got back to me. I will still have to pay the $49. However, they will put a credit authorization for the difference until I return the old iPad. Not the most ideal situation but at least I get to set up my new iPad first.

Are you blind? The question is not if there is a bend or not, and how subtle at all. Rather what can be done because this is not acceptable.

In any case they will replace it as long as I pay the $49 fee which I did.

Like I said before, it was always in a case. I have the Magic Folio, Brydge Keyboard, and now the Magic Keyboard.

The only reason I can see it bending is because I had issues with the shims/hinges which caused me to push down on the iPad a lot. Apparently those cases do not work well with glass screen protectors unless you buy their version. Since each hinge has independent movement I imagine it was possible to bend it while putting it in. Seems like a major flaw not to have them be connected.

In any case I am not sure if that is what caused the bend or something else.

Got my new iPad Pro in the mail. I was hoping to get the newer generation one (thinking they ran out of the old one). It is the same exact iPad as my old one. No bend! $49.99 for a new battery seems worth it either way.

Neither of those cases would protect from an incident which could cause a bend. Likely it came under pressure whilst in your bag.

I had a 10.5” iPad Pro (2017) that I kept in a similar case and used to carry around in a bag. When I read on the forums about the 2018 models bending I checked my 2017. I hadn’t noticed any bend up to that point. No prizes for guessing that it was bent.

I purchased an 11” Pro (2018) and when I’m carrying it in my bag I use this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0192PGB60/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Massive overkill and it takes up an absurdly annoying amount of space, but my 2018 is still as flat as a pancake.

Like I said in a previous post, I think it is the fault of the Brydge Pro keyboard hinges. Each hinge is independent of each other and if one is line up slightly wrong and you try to jam your iPad into it, there are probably problems.

I am currently using the Brydge Leather Case to move things to and from my office. Do you or does anyone know of any good case (that is slightly less casual) that fits the iPad Pro with magic keyboard?

It‘s been bent from the centre though. Is that where you were putting pressure when you were trying to jam your iPad in?

I believe so. The issue stems from the fact that those hinges do not like extra thickness (glass screen protector). Hence, the iPad Pro was never all the way in.

Besides that I baby my tech so it is the only thing I could think of that screwed everything up. I am pretty sure I checked my original iPad for bends when I heard this was a manufacturing problem. It was not bent then.

As for moving my iPad to and from work I always was very careful. In any case, I got a replacement for $49 with a fresh battery. Should hold me over until a proper update (Mini LED) comes out. Hopefully it works with the existing magic keyboard!
