I thought part the whole X brand was to show the next generation and years of design for future iPhones. Would be weird if an iPhone 9 also uses that name.

XS would also be strange. Will people pronounce it ‘ten ess’? Or ‘ecs ess’?

They really need to clean up the naming and simplify it a bit.

I don’t think it wouldn’t be a big deal to do iPhone X and iPhone X Plus for the OLED models. Not sure about the LCD though.

Still don’t think they would use XS, the “excess price” jokes would be too easy, but time will tell

It still does. The iPhone 9 is inferior to the iPhone X. Also, marketing anyway. :p

Apple pronounce it "ten", not "x". So "Ten S".

Same thing we went through with Mac OS X, which is pronounced "Mac OS ten".

Most of the possibilities have something wrong with them.

iPhone Xs - too close to extra small
iPhone 9 - incoherent when the “ten” launched last year.
iPhone XI (eleven) - eleven is the point where a numbering system becomes too much of a mouthful.
iPhone X 2018 - would mean standing still at 10.

It really will be interesting to see what they go with.

Maybe, 11 (5.8), 11 Plus (6.5) & 11C (6.1)?
The 5C came out with the C meaning "color". Can't see them reusing that name unless they have a colorful lineup. I imagine there would have been leaks by now if that were going to happen.

There was some chat/rumours around colours for the 6.1 model. Maybe like a month ago?

The “9” would still be inferior to today’s 10, so I don’t see how that is a problem. If anything it wraps up their current naming scheme because it is missing the 9.

But was it previously reported that the 9 would have glass back ? I thought it was supposed to be Aluminium.

The frame for 6.1" was always reported to be aluminum.

No credible source has reported anything about the back but glass is entirely reasonable.

Indeed.

“In a research note with TF Securities, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said the second-generation iPhone X will be available in Black, White, and Gold, while the 6.1-inch model is said to come in a wide array of colors, including red, blue, orange, gray, and white. An excerpt from the note follows.”

I don't think it'll be weird. iPhone 9 is the franken monster of iPhone 8 and X.

Retaining LCD and Aluminum from 8
Getting TrueDepth from X

Coming from iPhone 8, it's clearly an upgrade
Coming from iPhone X, it's clearly a downgrade* (except if you like the rumored screen size).

Besides, the showcase of iPhone X 2017 means that at the minimum, all the feature and materials on the current X must be met to qualify as "the future of iPhones" which iPhone 9 clearly isn't fulfilling (Single cam, LCD screen, Alum Chassis).

There were rumors that Apple also has contingencies in place if the iPhone X wasn't ready last year. Pretty much, the glitch in naming is an un avoidable outcome of such circumstances.

I doubt they will keep the number game up much longer. what will it be iPhone 17 eventually? nah
They will drop the number game when there is no more normal bezel phones and everything will be a X variant.
X and X+ will be my guess.
They will discontinue last years X
maybe just maybe they'll do x2 but I can see them doing the S scheme for these even though xs seems a little weird

I would not be surprised if they just went with the same scheme as the iPad range. "iPhone <size>". In other media this would be called "iPhone 2018 5.8 inch". Bit of a mouthful I agree. They might even call them "iPhone Pro 5.8 and 6.5 inch" vs "iPhone 6.1 inch". That would put them in line with their other product lines and indicate that they are something special from the more pedestrian cheaper device.

All good points. I don’t disagree. But the biggest thing about the X going forward for future of iPhones is the all screen home button-less design with Face ID. Though I can see Apple using iPhone 9 for the name.
