2018 mac mini and startup apple sound

How do I go about turning the startup sound down?
its loud as all getout when i turn this mini on, and bugs me

It seems than we can do that only with macOS Big Sur...

You have to turn sound off before logout and turn sound on after... It's boring to do.
Another way is to play with "SystemAudioVolume". No idea what sound will be of after that...

It’s free to update to Big Sur. There are quite a few improvements. Other than that you’ll have to do the hacky way to get the chime back

Are you having a headphone plugged in? If so, the internal speakers’ settings are not available until you unplug the headphone.

I think sudo nvram StartupMute=%01 in Terminal should do the trick. I did some time ago exactly the opposite (enabled the startup sound on my 2018 Mini with sudo nvram StartupMute=%00)
