How do I set up an eGPU, what will work with my thunderbolt 2? is it worth it?

I'd start here, this is my go-to place regarding eGPUs. I have a Mantiz Venus with RX580 on my 2012 Mini. Even with only Thunderbolt 1 it works very well with a minor tweak (since 10.13.4 broke eGPU for TB1 and TB2 without the tweak).

I recently did this on my Mini, but then moved the eGPU to my MBP. I ended up having to get a TB2-TB3 adapter and used the scripts at egpu.io to enable it. I have the Mantiz with a Vega 56 card in it.
