Third parties will sometimes knock $50-$100 of the MSRP but don't expect that for awhile. Also Apple will have refurb units probably 6 to 8 months down the road. That will save you a few bucks. Make sure you buy from an an Apple Authorized retailer.

Even newer products usually see a small discount on BF. You might save $50 or so waiting 3 weeks.

Configuration of core i3, 256 GB SSD, 8-16 GB RAM is suitable for your need

I'm thinking about getting a basic 2018 Mac mini, and was looking at the refurbished models on Apple's Web site. There's currently one listed for $679. Is that probably the lowest price one could ever hope for?

Thanks for any info.

Probably, but keep in mind that only the memory can be upgraded in these mini's. The SSD is soldered in.

Well, I've had a late-2007 Mac mini for nearly 12 years now and have never done any upgrading, so I think I'll probably be okay. :)

Thanks for your help, Martyimac. I guess I won't bother waiting for the prices to drop any lower then.

I ended up ordering a refurbished Mac mini, and it just arrived today. Now I have a question:

With a refurbished Mac mini, do I get the same standard warranty as if I'd bought a new one? In either case, how long is the warranty and how long do I get free Apple phone support? Thanks for any info.

It's the same as if you bought brand new. 1 year warranty and 90 days of phone support.

Thanks, Duncan68. When I called Apple today, the woman I spoke to told me that it was 60 days for each, and that just didn't sound right to me. What a relief. :)

Last night, I was trying to get my new Mac mini set up, and eventually I realized that my old VGA cable wasn't going to do the trick. ;) Anyway, my HP monitor is only about 2 years old, and thus it has an HDMI port. And I realized that I would have to buy an HDMI cable.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support, and the guy told me that I need HDMI 2.0, but not necessarily high-speed. Looking on the Web, however, it seems that just about all HDMI cables are high-speed.

Anyway, I was looking at this cable:

Since I just want a basic cable, is that one good enough? Thanks for any info.

That should work. Just be aware that the monitor static/black issue seems to be mostly associated with HDMI. Usually easily fixed by unplugging the HDMI cable from either the mini or the monitor then plugging it back in.

OK, thanks for the info, Martyimac. I thought about possibly getting a converter, but the Apple Support guy seemed to think that just getting an HDMI cable would be the best idea.

Regarding using your old keyboard; I just purchased my 2nd USB Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600 from Amazon.com which cost me around $18 and works perfect with my new MM 2018 and MM 2014. I am also using an old USB HP wired mouse with my MM's. The both have a very solid and responsive feel when operating my MM's. I have both connected with a Anker 4 port Hub which cost around $20 off Amazon.com

has anyone bought a mini recently given that it is now 6 months since launch. are there still problems with bluetooth/usb interference?

Haven't had any issues with bluetooth/USB. What problems are being reported?

No problems whatsoever with mine. The reported problems seem to have been connected with the use of certain kinds of USB-hubs. User who experienced problems ceased to have these issues once they removed said USB-hubs.

On the contrary I can report that my Mac Mini (sitting in the same place on the desk) is giving me better range for my wireless earsets, compared to my 2015 Macbook Air.

there were a few problems reported like coil whine, T2 crashes, high CPU temperature, etc. my biggest concern is the bluetooth/usb/wifi interference so wondering if things are better now.

Had mine since Nov 2018. No issues with coil whine or T2 or bluetooth. I use an external Sata SSD for storage in a USB-C enclosure. My Dell monitor acts as a USB-A hub, so I have no hubs or USB-A devices connected directly to the Mini.

The latest release of Mojave did cause an issue with the monitor sometimes losing signal during boot up (happens with HDMI, DP). It appears to be fixed in the next version of Mojave update.

As was mentioned above, refurbished units bought through the Apple refurbished store have the exact same warranty as brand new products. Apple is unique compared to many other companies in that way. However, if you buy a refurbished unit through someone else then the warranty may be a bit more iffy...

There was a concern - not unique to Apple - that USB 3.0 (and higher, presumably) speeds could interfere with 2.4 GHz wireless devices when the USB port and the wireless device are very close to each other. Just as an example, my router, which supports USB 3, has an option to downgrade the USB port to 2.0 speeds out of this concern. I don't know how realistic these concerns are, though... the router uses the connected hard drive pretty heavily and I haven't noticed any signal degradation. Regardless, there is a Mac mini thread on this forum where people were talking about it. Some people don't have the issue, others do and resolved it by purchasing an external Bluetooth device and connecting it to a hub. It may be device- and setup-dependent.

Ledgem adds an important piece of information here, which I forgot: the issues were, as Ledgem writes, related to 2.4 Ghz wifi - and not unique to Apple. Switching to 5Ghz wifi (which tends to yield higher transfer speeds anyway, as long as there aren't too many obstructions between router and machine) completely solves that.

Yes, glad I bought my refurbished Mac mini directly from Apple. :)
