2018 Mac Mini reaches 100° Celsius

Hey guys,

Every time I Restart the Mac Mini, the iStat Menus temperature readout is at 100° Celsius. After 20 seconds, it will go down to roughly 55°. What should I look for in order to fix this issue?

if it reads at 100 and then drops to 55 in 20 seconds, i would guess it's probably reporting the temperature incorrectly when it first starts up.

are there any other symptoms besides the reading itself?

I’m not hearing an issue. These new minis run hot under load. Mine will hit 99-100C after just a few seconds of high CPU load.

Thanks for your input. There are no other symptoms other than that. I tried removing all apps I have under Login Items (System Prefs) but that didn't help either. Strange.

Thanks. I do have IPG and the results are the same. I just can't figure out the high temp at start up.

Well, the macmini does look like a hotplate or a electronic burner upside down!

I think it’s normal behavior of the mini and mbp for temperature to spike on power up. I’ll run a few cycles today to show my results. 100 seems extreme but I know my temps are always high on power up.

Looks normal to me. As soon as you get a multicore workload going, which will probably be some degree of indexing or loading etc upon boot, the CPU hits max load. The fans spin up only as much as is needed to prevent overheating,
This is how Intel and Apple get max performance/efficiency out of this generation of CPUs.

Yes I would say it is normal for the 2018 Mini. Funny when I looked at my 30day and 7day iStat temps it showed it never went over 80C , That appeared to be playing a game. But when I did do the restart both iStat and Intel showed it hit the 100C.

These new 8th gen processors start up a little hotter than the previous ones. My 7th gen MBP hits 80C on restart and MM hits 100C

Yeah - just restarted mine. It didn't get up that hot actually. It pegged one core for a while, but no significant multicore usage going on. Maybe by the time I'd launched IntelPowerGadget the multicore part had finished?

Yes try adding intel app in systems preference, users & groups, login items. I bet you see a difference since it is a short time.

I would check if any app is making it spike, check which apps are running when you turn on the mac.

With iStat Menus, you can see the records for the last 30 days of the temperature, so you can also see if that has always happened (if you can recall the previous restarts).

My Mini is more or less always at 40°C, it sometimes spikes to 70°C (when I do something more intensive). I only had 100°C once (when I was compressing a disk image), but very briefly.

I feel better knowing that this isn't really an issue and seems we're kinda all in the same boat when Restarting the Mini. There aren't any apps at start up so ruling this out. I also noticed iStat Menus 7 day vs 30 differences. 30 Day never went passed roughly 85C. Not sure if this is an app bug or meant to be. I've also attached the last Restart and the IPG seems to be consistent with all others.
