Very late to this thread, apologize for the poor photo. But I just picked one of these up. Wth the i7-6 Core/3.2 GHz/ 512SSD/ 8GB DDR4 Ram/Intel graphics/ Dell-Ultrasharp 24”.
Idle speed sits at 91% with no apps open, wondering if this is normal?
Thanks

There are several different "background" processes that could consume that much CPU at “idle”.

You need to post a window dump of the Activity Monitor (Shift Command 4 then press the space bar before clicking with your mouse on the window) sorted by %CPU (click on that column heading).

I'm not seeing an issue on the blurry screenshot, but it looks to me like the CPU load is barely budging. 91% idle means it's doing NOTHING. It's when the other two (system + user) start peaking that you need to look for a problem.

After reading your post and re-looking at the posted photo, I realized that cstandar03 is probably misreading the %CPU table i.e. that the system is 91% busy instead of 91% idle.

FWIW even when I have several apps active: Foxfire, Mail, Activity monitor, Intel Power Gadget, etc. my 2018 i7 Mini is usually 90+% Idle.

Ah that makes sense, just seemed a little odd to me. Again, sorry for the pic here is a more detailed screen capture.
This next picture is with a small Ableton Live project open. And the idle remains at 91% with the project going/ without the project going. (Relatively new to OSX, so please bare with me).

Thanks! Happy Holidays.

Looks normal for starting a DAW. Just wait until you start adding effects and start messing with buffer sizes, it will then start to jump up.

You should go to "WINDOW" (top bar) while in Activity Monitor and select the "CPU USAGE" window. This will give you real-time thread usage and can help you monitor with a smaller footprint what applications cause a spike in processor. Good luck getting to know macOS!

The "load" posted in in #57 above looks to be right about where it should be...
