So I have a 2018 MacBook Air with the 3rd Generation Butterfly garbage and the "S" key just decided to break tonight. I have seen and read reports of the 2019 MacBook Pro keyboards becoming much more reliable with the new materials and the adjusted dome switch so I'm curious if anyone knows that the 2018 MacBook Air will be replaced with the 2019 keyboards or all previous generations of MBPs will be replaced with the 2019 keyboards? I know there is some limitations that make certain generations unable to be replaced due to hardware issues, but if anyone is aware of such information, any help is necessary.

Though it won't be the new scissor keyboard right?

I believe it will be the 2019 kb (non-scissor). There have been reports indicating both scenarios though (2018 and 2019). Best thing to do is both ask the technician and read the part numbers in the documentation.

I’m sure they will only replace like for like. Unless they make the new keyboard a replacement part in their systems. But just think of all the repair kits already shipped around the world for the 2018 so would appear to be a challenge.

Background : I tried once to have the English keyboard on my 12” swapped for German when it needed replacement. And they flat out refused as the English keyboard belonged to the Mac serial number (tried at two apple stores in Germany) ended up with like for like YMMV

There is no new scissors keyboard. Not sure where you guys are getting your information from, but everything is still the butterfly keyboard. For now.

Yeah, it's fairly simple: as of right now there is no scissor switch keyboard in the notebook client.

The weird part is the new keyboard materials are put in when the old keyboard needs to be replaced.

There is no new scissor switch keyboard. It's rumored, but it does not exist yet.

My understanding is that 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros and MacBooks will receive the 2017 keyboard while 2018 and 2019 MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs will receive the 2019 keyboard as part of the keyboard replacement program.

I have confirmed via Apples Internal Repair Program that is you have a 3rd gen 2018 keyboard and need to get it replaced, it will be replaced with a 4th gen 2019 model keyboard.

That's good to know; I took my six week old Air (2018) in to Apple today as I have problems with double spaces; they attempted to replace the space bar but then came back and said they would have to replace the top case (part number 661-12592). I hope this is 2019 version. Does the top case come with a new battery?
