Hello Everyone,

I had to take my 2018 MacBook Pro to get repaired at the local Apple Store for the butterfly keyboard issue. I got it back today, and they said they had to replace the top case which consists of a new battery, keyboard, touchpad, and speakers. Using 'Coconut Battery' application, I saw that the new battery is from a brand named "SWD" with 0 cycles.

My question is what is the proper break-in procedure with a brand new battery? Should I let it get down to 5% and charge it all the way up to 100%, and then keep it around 50-80% for most of the time? Just want to make sure I maintain the battery properly from the start since it's brand new.

Any help / feedback / etc. anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks,
Asif

My recommendation:

If you're running Big Sur, go to System Preferences/Battery and make sure "Optimized Battery Charging" is turned on. Then use your Mac normally, without doing anything special to manage or calibrate the battery. Doing this helps to minimize the number of full charge cycles your battery goes through.

If you're on Catalina, go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and look for the "Battery Health" button. Turn on "Battery health management". Use your Mac normally, as above.

If you're on Mojave or earlier, try to keep your battery between 21% and 94% charge as much as possible. Li-ion batteries are the most stressed when charging at low levels or high levels. In other words, don't connect the charger until you're close to 21% and disconnect the charger when you're around 94%.
