Hello ,

I have a 2018 MBP 15" i7/16GB/512 SSD/ 560x .

I'm hearing loud fan noise when working on photo editing using lightroom CC. This was my first editing work and i was surprised to hear the fan noise and the bottom gets really warm. i was only doing some light editing like adjusting the exposure settings. I did not even export the pictures in lightroom but only doing some light exposure settings makes the fan .

This is my first apple macbook. I'm not sure if this is normal. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I have the same configuration and also get the fan kicking in with warm top and bottom area of keyboard when navigating around in Lightroom CC.

Not sure if this is normal but I can see the CPU usage ramp up as I scroll around my library of images.

This should be normal noting that you were putting some sort of load using Lightroom, at times even when watching videos via quicklook for a glance my fans start to ramp up. I would rather have my fans ramp up than not hear it at all. Not hearing anything would be when I would worry rather than the other way around.

But it surprises me that by just scrolling through your images makes the fans spin louder and gets warmer at the bottom. I was thinking could it be due to my mid macbook model (i7 2.6ghz / 16GB /512SSD/560X) which makes the macbook run warmer. Will it be the same with the base model (i7 2.2ghz / 16GB /256 SSD/555x).

Anyone using the lightroom CC with a 15" base model noticing the same behavior?

I can't speak for Lightroom, but Adobe Premiere as it would kick on the fans like crazy even though it wasn't really doing much. I'm a little OCD, so I find it a huge distraction. I went back to Final Cut ASAP. I found this problem occurred also on my Dell XPS with Premiere.

I'm no programmer, but it lends me to believe the optimization isn't quite there with Adobe products. This was a deal breaker when I was planning on going back to Windows (obviously there is no Final Cut in Windows - I'd have to use Premiere).

Thanks for the info. Its good to know the same happens in Dell XPS. I will test it with the Final Cut Pro . Did you move to windows completely? Howz your experiences with the Dell XPS. Actually i was debating between the 15" MBP and Dell XPS 15. The price was close to the same so i went with Macbook since i wanted to try out MBP as a first time user.

[doublepost=1535215286][/doublepost]I loved the Dell XPS with the infinity edge screen. However, as previously mentioned, I couldn't stand the fan constantly kicking on which I think is largely due to a plastic chassis, and less subtle fan. However, a solution was to turn off turbo boost in the BIOS, and putting on headphones when I needed the turbo boost. It was a bit of a pain, but if I was completely against Apple, that's the way I'd go. Dell has a really cool eco-system, fun of solutions at reasonable prices that even go on sale - and you earn points the more you buy for further discounts. They still have ports, and you can manually upgrade memory and SSDs.

I went back to Apple for the same reason why I started with them - the minimalistic UI and the relatively quiet fan operation. Also if you have an iPhone, and an Apple Watch, you can't beat the level of integration you get from the Apple eco-system. Not to mention, it's better value when you consider Final Cut, iMovie, Garageband, Logic - all software that IS NOT SUBSCRIPTION (screw renting software Adobe).

Thank you . Do you have the base model or mid-model ?

This MBP runs hot, and once the temps creep into the 80c range, if not sooner, the fans spin up. This is normal, if you want a whisper quiet laptop, I recommend the 12" MacBook.

The 15" MBP has a 6 core processor and a discrete GPU built in, its going to get hot. The MBP,is much quieter then other windows PCs using the same Coffee Lake processor. I had a Razer and that thing was loud. I'm extremely happy with how the MBP behaves with the fans.

If the fans are running, there is a reason for that, i.e., heat.

Hi,

I watched a YouTube livestream yesterday and my newly MacBook Pro 15", 2.2ghz i7, 16gb ram, 512ssd. 560x (5 days old) temperature went up to between 75-80 degrees and my fans RPM where about 4k. Is this normal?

remember back 15-20 years ago when laptops could scroll images and replay videos without pushing the CPU to 100C and the fans to jet-engine mode?

I don't think that's normal or acceptable but it seems to happen with MacBook Pros since 2016.

My 5+ year old cheap £500 Thinkpad can do this without overheating or sounding like a rocket.

So can my Android smartphone ....

What program do you use to see the cpu temp and fan speed?

@DaveMike11, @SDColorado, @nowarez, and others affected, can you try installing the supplemental update that was released today? At least one user said that the update fixed his high heat/fan issue. Ideally, you could do a before/after test if you are seeing this before updating.

I've made a post dedicated to discussing whether the supplemental update fixed this issue: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...igh-fan-activity-heat-issue-resolved.2134424/

Since installing the update, the issue I was having with certain web pages causing the fans to ramp up and temps into the upper 90's, seems to have been resolved.

Running Affinity Photo and doing RAW editing causes my 2018 15 to get hot and the fans really kick in sometimes.

Is it better/worse/same with this new supplemental update ?
Admittedly this was in the latest public beta of Mojave, but I'm not expecting it to be any different with the update. I have downgraded back to HS for other reasons and will be testing tomorrow so I'll post an update here. Do you use Affinity?

It may be worthwhile trying the patch and downgrading back to HS. I was just doing some experimentation with Affinity and did not notice anything unexpected or sustained regarding temps while using it with an i9 model.

That’s what I’m trying to do, but now I’m back at the first patch of HS and can’t update...going round in circles
